ADULT STUDENTS EXPERIENCE NEW COMPREHENSIVE ORIENTATION HAVE A TOPIC IDEA FOR NEXT YEAR’S EVENT? SEND US AN E-MAIL GLOBALPROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS@MARIST.EDU In the first effort to combine adult students in all undergraduate and graduate disciplines, orientation was held on Saturday August 21st by the School of Global & Professional Programs in collaboration with all academic schools. Marist recognizes that adult students have different needs and varying levels of college experience. The benefits of a comprehensive orientation enhance the student experience making students feel welcomed and more informed about their education. With an attendance of over 300; students became acquainted with various policies and services available with a presentation in the cabaret followed by an interactive fair with representatives from various campus services. Students were able to get their college ID card and ask questions from offices such as Registrar, Student Financial Services, Career Services, Academic Learning Center, Help Desk, International Programs, Academic Technology, Computer Store, Center for Advising and Academic Services and Health Services. Students then enjoyed a BBQ lunch on the campus green where they had the opportunity to mingle with future classmates and get to know faculty and staff. Academic break out sessions concluded the day. CAREER PANEL EVENT On Saturday, October 16, 2010, the College held its annual Homecoming/Alumni Weekend event. A career panel entitled, “The Current Job Market and Global Economy” was presented to Marist alumni and current students by the School of Global & Professional Programs. The panel was moderated by School of Global & Professional Programs full-time Lecturer of Organizational Leadership & Communication, Dr. David Testa. Panelists included Mary Boone, President, Boone Associates, Tony Nicolis, Owner, Nicolis Insurance Agency, Inc., and Liz van Caloen, Teacher; former Senior Analyst, Glenrock Funds. Attendees found the discussion both impressive and helpful in gathering information about the economy and their job search. MEET THE DEAN EVENT Hosted by Dean Lauren Mounty on October 20th , students enjoyed the opportunity to share refreshments and feedback with staff and mingle with other students at our Meet the Dean Event. With little occasion to network, adult students were able to come together and learn more about each other, build a relationship with the Dean, and foster a stronger sense of community within the college. The Fishkill Executive Center set the backdrop for this event where students also learned more about the services and programs available to them through an ice-breaker exercise. Prizes were raffled off to those who completed the exercise. Winning first prize and splitting a gift card from Barnes & Noble was a two person team from the BA Psychology Completion program, James Murphy and Maddelena Mejia. Second place, a Marist stainless steel water bottle, went to OLC Cohort #25 student Tim Toomey. 10 The Navigator Issue 2 | Volume 2 | Fall 2010 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Thomas B. Timberlake, a student in a cohort of IBM employees taking classes toward a Bachelor of Science degree at the Marist Fishkill Executive Center, was the recipient of the 2010 Marist College General Excellence Award. The award for excellence in Integrative Studies is made to a graduate who has demonstrated a high academic achievement in the integrative studies program. SPOTLIGHT ON: THOMAS B. TIMBERLAKE ‘10 After an almost twenty year hiatus from the classroom following completion of an Associate’s Degree at Dutchess Community College in 1987, Tom joined a cohort of IBM employees in an Integrative Studies program with concentrations in Organizational Administration, Communication, and Technology Management. From the time Tom made the decision to return to the classroom as a member of Cohort 8 in the Fall of 2005, he was determined to make the most of his studies and was inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda, the adult student honor society, in 2009. And while Tom’s cohort is scheduled to complete its degrees in May of 2011, in the last two years Tom has taken classes with other cohorts, as well as online, to finish his degree a year ahead of his cohort, while still managing to graduate Summa Cum Laude, maintaining a 4.0 GPA in the 69 credits he has completed at Marist. Tom has had a 23 year career with IBM, and lives with his wife Rachel (Marist MBA 2009). They are proud to have raised daughter, Jacquelyn, who currently attends Ithaca College. He is currently the lead technician for the PLY tactical engineering department in IBM East Fishkill’s 300 mm Semiconductor facility. Before his graduation, he was able to put some of the skills and knowledge he’d acquired in his studies at Marist to work for him in a project team responsible for standardizing work instructions for the 300mm organization at IBM. Thomas didn’t let his job and family responsibilities deter him from constantly challenging himself. In his commencement address he said “I’ve learned more in the past four years than the previous twenty combined. I’ve also learned what college does for us, and our thought processes. A college education does not provide a blueprint with detailed instructions on how to perform a specific job or task. It is a life experience that challenges us to use our intelligence, creativity, and to think in ways we never thought possible.” In that commencement address, Tom also spoke of Gail Sheehy’s discussion of the different stages of life in her book Passages. He explained that his stage of life, along with his education at Marist, made him listen to the voices inside that questioned him, and have, ultimately, provided him new perspectives along with rejuvenated aspirations for his career. He looks forward to “learning, not only about the facts, but the whys and the what-ifs.” He doesn’t intend to let his education end with his Bachelor’s Degree and has plans to continue his studies at Marist in the MBA program. But when asked how he plans to spend his free time in the immediate future, he says “I plan to do a lot of fishing this summer.” He has worked hard for that well-deserved down time, as well as for our congratulations on a job well done. 11 FROM THE EDITOR Another successful academic year is behind me and I look to the future as I begin my 9 th year as a Marist administrator in the area of student services. I enjoyed a busy summer - contrary to popular belief that I get summers off working in education! The adult students never stop going to school and are more likely to take classes in the summer to offset their busy schedules in the traditional fall and spring months. Summer is also the time I get to reflect, review and then revamp various student services and events. The biggest project this summer was the new collaborative adult student orientation that included adult undergraduate and graduate students. Our school hosted a successful orientation last fall for new undergraduate adult students, and this year’s plan to include graduate students proved to be another positive step in welcoming our adult student population. Another great success was the 28 th induction ceremony for Alpha Sigma Lambda in May. Students are so proud of this achievement, as they should be, and the event was well attended. I hope future ceremonies will be just as rewarding and special to students as this one. Of course, there was also this year’s commencement and the new stage cover. Since graduation is usually a onetime event for students, I think the appreciation of the new stage cover was really a thrill for faculty and staff that attend graduation year after year. Graduation is always a beautiful event on our campus green and I hadn’t realized there could be any improvements until the new stage cover arrived. If you have about 3 minutes to spare, check out the time lapse video on You Tube of the commencement setup and both ceremonies (entitled Marist College Campus Green Commencement) courtesy of our media center. As we began our new 2010 – 2011 academic year, the School of Global & Professional Programs has been working to bring more to the adult student and to expand our online and hybrid options. The expansion of evening classes offered in the Fishkill Center, a larger variety of online winter courses, a sponsored career panel event at homecoming, and a Meet the Dean event are just some of the new and exciting things we are doing. We have collaborated with the School of Computer Science & Math to bring you a certificate in Financial Planning and the School of Social & Behavioral Sciences has designed a new format for our Psychology Degree Completion Program in Fishkill. Spring 2011 orientation is planned for Wednesday January 12th and our 29th induction ceremony for Alpha Sigma Lambda will take place in early May of 2011. Be sure to check the website at www.marist.edu/gpp for information and events. A special thank you to all my colleagues in Global & Professional Programs for helping me put this newsletter together.
