D o n ’ t K n o c k Yo u r s e l f O u t t o Pr e v e n t D i a b e t e s Have you wondered or possibly been told that you are at risk for developing diabetes or that you have pre-diabetes? Diabetes prevention is proven, possible, and powerful. Studies show that people at high risk for diabetes can prevent or delay the onset of the disease by losing 5 to 7 percent of their weight, if they are overweight—that’s 10 to 14 pounds for a 200-pound person. When you take steps to prevent diabetes, you will also lower your risk for possible complications of diabetes such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, nerve damage, and other health problems. That’s a big reward for you, your family, and friends. Two keys to success: • Get at least 30 minutes of moderateintensity physical activity five days a week. • Eat a variety of foods that are low in fat and reduce the number of calories you eat per day. In other words, you don’t have to knock yourself out to prevent diabetes. You don’t have to knock yourself out to prevent diabetes. If you have diabetes and would like support in managing your disease you may be eligible for a pilot program that offers fitness, nutrition, and medication discounts. Call 765-285-3023 for more information. The key is: small steps that lead to big rewards. The State of Employee Health Assessment More than 1,000 Ball State employees completed the Life Health Assessment fall 2008. The average score was 68. This score is an indicator of wellness that takes into account all assessed behaviors. A score below 80 indicates an elevated likelihood that individuals will develop certain medical conditions. It can also indicate a likelihood of increased absenteeism and decreased productivity. Employees who did not take the Life Health Assessment in the fall will have an opportunity to do so in the spring. The good news is more than half the population surveyed said they were ready to make a positive lifestyle change. 2 The Life Health Assessment will also be offered to spouses covered under the Ball State medical plans.
