RE:
Nominations for the Excellence in Public Service and Engagement Award
The UNC School of Social Work is currently accepting nominations for the Excellence in Public Service
and Engagement Award. This is the inaugural year for this award that will be presented each spring to a
member of the faculty. The award aims to recognize the invaluable contributions that our faculty make
in the communities with which they engage locally, statewide, nationally and globally.
Please consider submitting a nomination for this award which recognizes outstanding service and
contributions to the community. You may nominate a School of Social Work faculty member for either a
specific effort or for an overall record of engagement with individuals and organizations to address
socially and economically just policies and program that strengthen individuals, families, groups,
organizations, and communities.
This award is open to all faculty members. Nominations may be submitted by any individual, community
group or agency with knowledge of the nominee’s engagement activities. Self-nominations are
encouraged.
What is Engagement?
Engagement elaborates on the University’s traditional notion of service. Faculty engagement includes
scholarly, pedagogical, and creative activities for the public good. It includes public service activities and
scholarship that emanates from collaborative ties outside of what we have seen as our traditional
scholarly community. Faculty demonstrate engaged scholarship by bringing knowledge development
from within the university and partnering with practitioners, scholars, and the general public for the cocreation and application of new knowledge. They collaborate with individuals, organizations, and
communities to apply that knowledge through written, spoken, and visual means for the betterment of
the community, state, nation, and world.
A Few Indicators of Excellence:
 Consistently helps groups clearly articulate goals and identify possible solutions and action steps to
achieve goals
 Promotes teamwork and collaboration
 Engages peers in a constructive and helpful manner
 Takes initiative to address issues
 Performs above and beyond the typical expectations of a given role
 Engaged in addressing substantive, complex, sensitive, or challenging issues. (How tough was the
challenge?)
 Demonstrates professional integrity, honesty.
 Works in partnership with community members or entities. Demonstrates collaboration and builds
capacity.
Please complete the nomination form including a statement that describes the public service and
