TO: NC Public School Principals FROM: State Superintendent June Atkinson DATE: June 18, 2015 The NC Senate approved its budget yesterday, and now we await the process of Senate and House leadership ironing out a final budget for the 2015-17 biennium. Both budgets are available online at http://www.ncleg.net under News and Information. I look forward to seeing many of you later this month at the annual Summer Leadership Conference in Asheville. Regards, June Atkinson In this Biweekly Principals’ Message: 1. NC Charter School Performance Framework Released 2. Professional Development Opportunity Focuses on Action Research 3. NCVPS Summer Session Registration Ends Tomorrow * NC Charter School Performance Framework Released - North Carolinians can now review charter school performance in the key areas of academics, finance and operations by viewing the NC Charter School Performance Framework, which is available online at ocs.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/2015+NC+Charter+School+Performance+Framework. This is the first time that information about financial and operational expectations for each charter school has been provided in a comprehensive way. The November 2014 State Board of Education Strategic Plan directed the NCDPI to establish a Performance Framework for all charter schools to provide more information about the schools’ overall health. The NC School Report Cards already include information on charter schools and other public schools, but the Charter Framework includes operational details specific to charter schools. * Professional Development Opportunity Focuses on Action Research Following the success of the Action Research Pathway for the Governor’s Teacher Network, NCDPI Educator Effectiveness announces the release of new self-paced online professional development module on action research. - Action Research for the Classroom: An Introduction Action research takes reflective practice of teachers and adds a dimension of systematic inquiry that helps clarify how their particular classrooms/schools operate, how well they teach and how well their students learn. Participants will learn each step of the action research process so that they are ready to conduct an inquiry in their own educational setting. This module is self-paced and will require approximately 20 hours to complete. Participants will earn two CEUs upon satisfactory completion. For educators who actually want to complete an action research project and receive instructor feedback throughout the project, staff also will have a 10-week facilitated course, Implementing Action Research in the Classroom, starting in fall 2015.
