The second annual ELL Support Conference will offer concurrent 3-day training events. Participants will choose one event to attend the 3 days of training. The conference will include an opening joint session where participants will explore the vision for ESL in NC! A minimal registration fee will be charged for this event. Session Description Addressing the Diversity of Newcomers and SIFE Dr. Margarita Calderón, Johns Hopkins University Professor Emerita, will address integrating social and academic language to increase rigor for newcomers and SIFE students. She will offer insights on the range of backgrounds, linguistic, literacy and academic needs of these students, helping to break the misconceptions of who they are. Who Should Attend? All-Opening Session Level All Audiences Integrating Social, Language, Literacy, and Content Development for Accelerating The Learning of Newcomers and SIFE In this interactive 3 day session, Dr. Margarita Calderón, Johns Hopkins University Professor Emerita, will demonstrate how even proficiency level 1 newcomer and SIFE students can read and write from the start! She will stress rigorous content and use of the 4 domains, as well as how to help student progress in both social language and participation skills, as well as beginning academic language, reading at different levels, and writing strategies for each level. All ESL Teachers, Content Teachers, Coaches, and Administrators All Audiences The North Carolina Guide to ExC-ELL This session will offer literacy development with K-12 English language learners via Margarita Calderon's Expediting Reading Comprehension for English Language Learners (ExC-ELL) program. ESL Teachers, Content Teachers, Coaches, and Administrators with little to no previous knowledge of the ExC-ELL framework. Beginner Session Description Best Practices for ELLs This interactive session will focus on best practices for meeting the needs of English Language Learners (ELLs). Participants will explore: second language acquisition academic standards academic vocabulary socio-cultural context of language scaffolding strategies and much more! Who Should Attend? ESL Teachers, Content Teachers, Coaches and Administrators with little to no knowledge of best practices for ELLs. Level Beginner The North Carolina Guide to SIOP This session will offer training on the SIOP® Model, an empirically-validated approach to teaching that helps prepare all students—especially English learners. As a framework for organizing instruction, the SIOP Model supports teachers in planning and delivering high-quality instruction for all students. ESL Teachers, Content Teachers, Coaches, and Administrators with little to no previous knowledge of the SIOP® Model. Beginner Digging Deeper into WIDA (Standards) Participants will explore various strategies for implementation including uses of the FREE on-line WIDA Training Modules including self-study, PLCs, presentations, etc. Participants will also dig deeply into the WIDA standards, exploring the NC English Language Arts MPIs, Lesson Planning, and Formative Assessment etc. A strong knowledge of WIDA is recommended but not required. ESL Teachers, Content Teachers, Coaches, and Administrators with a working knowledge of the WIDA standards and their application within the classroom. Intermediate/Advanced Digital Integration in the 21st Century for ELLs Learn how to increase the creativity and productivity of English language learners by using and creating digital resources that allow them to “show what they know” and “glow as they grow”! This high-energy session will have participants reflecting on their use of technology, increasing their app fluency, learning how to find and curate great tech ideas, and designing appsmashed tech projects that will change the culture of educating their English learners in the 21st century. All ESL Teachers, Content Teachers, Coaches and Administrators All Audiences ® Session Description PortFolios for Linguistic Progress This interactive session will explore LinguaFolio, an innovative portfolio assessment instrument designed to support individuals in setting and achieving their goals for learning languages. Participants will learn various ways to use the portfolio, explore the FREE on-line LinguaFolio Training Modules and experience the electronic version of the portfolio. Who Should Attend?
