The Center for U.S. and Mexican Law is the first research center in any U.S. law school devoted to the independent,
critical study of Mexican law and legal aspects of U.S. – Mexico relations. Based at the University of Houston, the
Center assists UH law students to arrange summer externships in Mexico City with the following prestigious Mexican
institutions.



Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE)
Mexico’s National Hydrocarbons Commission (CNH)
Pemex (Petróleos Mexicanos)
Due to the limited number of positions available, the application process is competitive. Please fill out the following
application in order to be considered. You may use additional space and/or attach answers on separate pages as
necessary.
Externship Prerequisites:

These externships are available to University of Houston law students who will have completed at least two full
semesters of study in the J.D. Program, OR who will have completed at least 12 units of study in the LL.M.
Program prior to the beginning of the externship.
The externships require that the student have a proficient level of Spanish fluency. If selected, you will be
working with Mexican lawyers in both Spanish and English, and while perfect fluency is not required you must
be able to communicate in Spanish.
Students accepted to the summer externship program are responsible for their own airfare, lodging and food
expenses during their stay in Mexico.
Accepted students must commit to work in Mexico for a minimum of 6 weeks.




Information on Credit and Funding:

Students that are accepted to the Center for U.S. and Mexican Law Summer Externship Program and are
placed with one of the three Mexican organizations may be eligible for academic credit. Students interested in
receiving academic credit should contact Externship Program Director, Erma Bonadero at
ecbonade@central.uh.edu. For more information about academic credit, visit

The Global Fellowship Program assists students pursuing international placements during the summer with
government and nonprofit agencies. 1Ls, 2Ls, and part-time 3Ls in good academic standing are eligible to
apply. LLM students are also eligible to apply, however, preference will be given to JD students.

be given to applicants who are available the entire summer.
