DEPARTMENT OF PHYSIOLOGY & HEALTH SCIENCE For Alumni and Friends FROM THE CHAIR Dear Alumni and Friends, I am pleased to be writing you as the Department of Physiology & Health Science transitions after many Spring 2012 retirements. This begins my 10th year at Ball State and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to lead the department. Until now, my main role in the department has been the coordination of the School Health Program. Like the School Health Program, I am confident that our department can grow and evolve in positive ways. In my first month as chair, I have worked with a team of colleagues to hire four new contract faculty members. I would like to publicly thank Sue Paul and Dr. Marty Wood for their dedication to our search committee this summer. Please help me in welcoming our new faculty members to Ball State and the Department: Lisa (Geiger) Beck, MEd – Ball State Class of 1997, School Health, was most recently a community outreach coordinator for Bluffton Regional Medical Center. She brings endless enthusiasm and the ability to contribute to both programs in our department (school and community health). Yuba Gautam, MS, ABD – He is completing his PhD at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale and is a graduate of Mankato State University. Yuba brings quality teaching, diversity, and a steady personality to our department. with Dr. Denise Seabert Dena Mullins, MA – Ball State alumna - BS (1998) in Physical Education and MA (1990) in Health Science. She has previously taught for us, but most recently has been an instructor at IUPUI. Dena will support the department with a wealth of classroom and online teaching experience. Lisa Smith, MS – BS (2003) and MS (2008) from Ball State Department of Physiology & Health Science – has worked in smoking cessation, cancer research, and women’s health. She will serve as our primary department advisor and brings solid work experience to support her teaching and mentoring of our majors. I am truly excited about the coming year and in the opportunity to serve the department in this capacity. We are looking forward to reconnecting with alumni this fall. Indiana SOPHE will be sponsoring a workshop on September 12, 2012, at the Ball State Alumni Center titled “Following the obesity trail: Advocating for a healthier Indiana.” We will be hosting our annual McGovern Lecture on Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at 7 p.m. in the Ball State Student Center Ballroom. The lecture, to be delivered by Dr. Judy Van de Water, is titled “Autism Spectrum Disorders: The search for biomarkers.” Ball State Homecoming is October 13, 2012, with a football game against Western Michigan. We hope to see some of you at one of these events or the next time you are in Muncie. Wishing you and yours a colorful fall! She was accepted into Physician Assistant school at South College in Knoxville, Tennessee. Research Funded by National Science Foundation Jagdish Khubchandani, PhD, MPH sponsored five health science students for the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation summer research program (funded by the National Science Foundation). Alicia McClendon, Eryn Pulliam Cannon, Chaztan Moore, Jillian Hicks, and Emily Sullivan (winners of the summer scholarship) will receive a funding of $3,000 each for the summer research. The group is researching minority youth health disparities, adolescent dating violence, and diabetes in racial and ethnic minority adults in the United States. Last year, Dr. Khubchandani sponsored two students for the same program. Ball State Official Host for NIDDK/ NIH Summer Student Research Physician Assistant School (From top)— Audrey Frazer. National Science Foundation Research Chaztan Moore, Emily Sullivan, Alicia McClendon, Eryn Pulliam Cannon, and Jillian Hicks Emily Sullivan has been sponsored by Dr. Jagdish Khubchandani for the NIDDK STEPUP summer research fellowship. The Short-Term Education Program for Underrepresented Persons (STEP-UP) is a federally funded program managed and supported by the Office of Minority Health Research Coordination (OMHRC) in the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health. NIDDK STEP-UP emphasizes increasing the participation of students from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research on a national basis to promote the mission of NIDDK/ NIH. To accommodate Dr. Khubchandani and Emily Sullivan’s proposed research, an exception was made by the NIDDK STEP-UP to make the Department of Physiology and Health Science at Ball State University a designated epidemiologic research center via the Sponsored Programs Office. Sullivan will be paid a stipend, and the department will be given an award by NIDDK STEP-UP for supporting the research program. Currently, Sullivan and Dr. Khubchandani are looking at the National Health Interview Survey to assess the correlates of diabetes in minority adults. Martin is serving as the program’s director, and Schlueter is a coach, along with Jon Conway, Lindsay Farmer, and Heather Bauer. Aaron Schlueter shares an impromptu piano “We have a great group of lesson with students in the Atrium. students and staff; they are a joy to be around,” says Martin. Each morning the crew of 21 students from Southside and Muncie Central High School work on gardening tasks and beautifying Ball State’s campus or downtown Muncie. The coaches work alongside the kids. They teach them the safe ways to use common gardening equipment and complete tasks. Staff also provide extra muscle when needed for a stubborn tree root, or a heavily loaded wheelbarrow. The students are also helping out their community by volunteering at the First Harvest Food Bank, and with Muncie/ Delaware Clean and Beautiful. In the afternoons, the students work with Ball Students in Pro100 are learning to use Google Docs, State professors to learn and other computer technology. valuable computer skills and have had leadership training workshops. This program, funded by the Maryanne Glick Foundation and The Children’s Bureau, has been going successfully in the Indianapolis area for 31 years. It is the hope that the Muncie program will have a same measure of success. “We continue to see this program growing as students talk about their positive experiences with their peers,” said Landon Martin. This program is a way for kids age 14 to 18 to gain work experience and job skills to help bridge the knowledge loss that usually happens over a typical summer, as well as, earning more than $1,000. Students who apply for this program must have no failing grades, plans to graduate high school, and provide a reference letter from a teacher. Landon Martin leads students in landscaping.
