Careers in Biology Assignment
Using the Careers List posted on the CP Biology homepage, choose ONE career to
research. Your assignment is to write a short paper that includes the following
information.
A. Career Research:
Career is described in detail, including ALL of the following information:
1. Job Description (What are these people actually paid to DO?)
2. Working Conditions
3. Earnings (from beginner to top salaries)
4. Education and Skills Needed
5. Career path (schooling, promotion prospects, continuing training)
Write in an ATTRACTIVE WAY, as if you are “selling” this career to others! Write in paragraph form.

B. Biological Topic – Needed as Background
Again, using the Careers List posted on the CP Biology homepage, choose TWO topics from our biology
class that is “needed as background” (the smaller sized dots) for the chosen career. In sentence
format, briefly describe how each topic is related to the job. Write at least 3 sentences per topic. (6
pts.) *If you chose a career that only has LARGE dots, choose 2 large dots for Part B.
C. Biological relevance for the career
Here you will elaborate on 2 biological topics that are “Mostly needed for the job!” (the larger sized
dots) for the chosen career. In sentence format, explain why this biological knowledge is essential for
the chosen career. Use specific science language so it is clear that you understand precisely what it is
about the topic that makes it necessary for the job. Write at least 3 sentences for each topic. (6 pts.)
For example –Farming depends on knowledge of the nitrogen cycle, because farmers need to plan
good fertilizers or supplementing the soil with nitrogen fixing bacteria. Cosmetologists must know about
enzymes, since many of their treatments to the skin use enzymes that breakdown proteins or fats.
D. Personal Statement
Now that you have investigated a career that interests you, write a paragraph of at least 5
sentences describing and explaining why you are interested in the chosen career and what it is about the
career that you think you would like. Alternatively, if there are characteristics of the career that have
caused you to no longer be fully interested in that career, describe what those characteristics are. (5
pts.)
E. Bibliography:
All resources are given in detail, including complete URL addresses of websites, as well as their
titles. Your sources do NOT need to be in MLA format, but they must be complete and accurate so we
could get to the source if needed. (3 pts.)
