INVENTORY QUESTIONS FOR ASSESSMENT Campus Mission and Culture Question Is UGR included, and/or its value expressed, in the following institutional documents: • Mission statement • Core learning outcomes Inventory Yes Undergraduate research is being supported by the administration and at the institutional level as evidenced by the university mission, vision, and enduring goals statements. Each college has Mission and/or strategic planning documents which supports undergraduate research. No Support of undergraduate research is less clear at the department and program level. Both a teaching and research requirement is in place faculty promotion and tenure at the university level and by departments. However, promotion/tenure documents are difficult to find for some departments/programs making it difficult to assess value placed on undergraduate research. While research is a criteria for promotion and tenure is listed it is not evident what percentage focuses on research and what percentage focuses on teaching. There does not seem to be a connection between research and pedagogy. Recognizing faculty for using undergraduate research as a teaching strategy goes unmentioned and unrecognized. Yes, see “Mission Statement” and goals at http://www.uwstout.edu/geninfo/stratplan.cfm Yes, see “Enduring Goals” at http://www.uwstout.edu/geninfo/stratplan.cfm College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences http://www.uwstout.edu/rs/definitions-ofresearch.cfm College of Education, Health and Human Sciences http://www.uwstout.edu/ehh/about.cfm College of Management Page 1 http://www.uwstout.edu/com/mission.cfm Science, Technology, Engineering and Math http://www.uwstout.edu/stem/mission.cfm • Strategic plan • Reappointment, Tenure, and Promotion document Yes, see “Focus 2015” and goals at http://www.uwstout.edu/geninfo/stratplan.cfm College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences http://www.uwstout.edu/rs/definitions-ofresearch.cfm College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences http://www.uwstout.edu/ehh/ (select CEHSS Strategic Plan) Science, Technology, Engineering and Math http://www.uwstout.edu/stem/stemcollegegoals.cfm College of Management http://www.uwstout.edu/com/stratplan.cfm (mention of global engagement – it is not clear if this indicates undergraduate research). Inventory Page 2 Does your institution have a clear articulation of the role and value of research, scholarship, and creative activity? • For faculty? While definitions for faculty research are in place there is a need to so the same for undergraduate research. There are a number of resources in place that support undergraduate research. UW-Stout’s “Research Services” office has web pages and services developed to support undergraduate research. Colleges, Research Services, and CORE could work together to more robustly define and more clearly communicate the value of undergraduate research. The websites listed below have information about activities related to graduate and undergraduate research but the “value” piece is missing. November, 2010 Definition of Teaching, Scholarly Activity, and Service http://www.uwstout.edu/rs/upload/UniversityDefinition-of-Research.pdf Definitions of Research (need to be more easily accessed) can be found at http://www.uwstout.edu/rs/definitions-ofresearch.cfm CORE: Creative Original Research Experience Committee http://www.uwstout.edu/core/index.cfm • For graduate students? Information relative to graduate studies can be found at: http://www.uwstout.edu/grad/index.cfm • For undergraduate students? Opportunities for undergraduate research can be found at: http://www.uwstout.edu/rs/student_opp.cfm Inventory Page 3 Is UGR an important component of your institution’s culture? Undergraduate research is supported by the administration, deans and some faculty. We are working together to make undergraduate research a part of UW-Stout’s culture. There seem to be some areas that can be addressed to help support the institutionalization of undergraduate research. This includes looking at undergraduate research as a teaching/learning tool and recognizing it as such in promotion and tenure related activities. Clearly defining and articulating the value of undergraduate research for UW-Stout’s stakeholders is an area for improvement. Administrative and Campus Governance Question Is UGR across the campus centralized or coordinated through a dedicated unit? Does your campus have an ‘undergraduate research office?’ Yes Undergraduate research is coordinated through Research Services and a Student Research Manager http://www.uwstout.edu/rs/staff.cfm Does your campus have a ‘faculty development office’ The Nakatani Teaching and Learning Center coordinates faculty development opportunities. This office has worked with CORE and Research services to promote undergraduate research. http://www.uwstout.edu/ntlc/AboutNTLC/about.cfm The Nakatani Learning Center sponsors a number of programs for new faculty including: New Instructor Workshop http://www.uwstout.edu/ntlc/OnCampusOpportunities/newinstr uctorworkshop.cfm Communities of Practice http://www.uwstout.edu/ntlc/OnCampusOpportunities/commun itypractice.cfm Sharing Communities Does your campus have a ‘faculty mentoring’ program for new and/or ‘newish’ faculty? Inventory No Undergraduate research activities are coordinated by the Student Research Manager in Research Services. Student opportunities for the campus are coordinated by this office http://www.uwstout.edu/rs/student_opp.cfm Page 4 http://www.uwstout.edu/ntlc/OnCampusOpportunities/commun itypractice.cfm Other Resources http://www.uwstout.edu/ntlc/OnCampusOpportunities/resource stutorials.cfm Does the campus have a UGR campus committee? Does your institution have a clear articulation of the role and value of research, scholarship, and creative activity? CORE: Creative Original Research Experiences Committee http://www.uwstout.edu/core/ The infrastructure for supporting faculty and students has been laid at UW-Stout. The missing piece is the clear articulation of the role and value of research, scholarship and creative activities consistently throughout the campus. A unified “voice” in an easily accessible, central location is needed. Grants, Contracts, Sponsored Research Question Does your campus have an Office of Sponsored Research that assists faculty members in seeking external funding and assisting/submitting external research proposals? Does your institution provide matching funds when required for external grants? Does your institution have an indirect cost policy and structure? Does your institution return a portion of grant indirect costs to individual principal investigators or departments?
