Mini-paper (Connecting with the Anchor):
-
-
The purpose of this writing assignment is simply to get the students to explicitly think about connections
between our course and their anchor course throughout the semester. It isn’t due until near the end of the
semester, but I announce the assignment very early on with the hope that students will be thinking about
potential connections throughout our course. I use an assignment like this for both Discourse 100 and
200.
To the best of my ability, the assignment assessed the following SLO’s:




Interpret and analyze discourse that deals with issues of cultural and/or global diversity in a
variety of forms.
Identify factors defining cultural identities and analyze how these are employed in a variety of
discourse.
Communicate competently in several genres and in response to the needs of different audiences.
Appropriately cite sources using a consistent professional style (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.) at an
intermediate level.

Mini-paper #2: Connecting with the Anchor
For this assignment, simply write about any connection you see between the theme of our
course and that of your anchor course. Think about the texts we have read and the discussions
we’ve held, and write about the ways in which these texts and discussions intersect with any
aspects of the lectures and/or readings from your anchor course. The more specific requirements
are listed below:
1. Your paper must clearly deal with the connections you’ve found between our course and
your anchor course.
2. You must successfully integrate at least two quotations from one or more of the texts
we’ve thus far considered in our discourse class.
3. You must also successfully integrate at least two sources from your anchor course. These
sources can come from your lecture notes, outlines, or the texts you’ve read in the anchor.
4. Your writing must be at least 700 words in length.
5. Mini-paper #2 is due at the start of class on Wednesday, March 19th.
