REQUIRED on first lab day Lab Manual: Human A&P Laboratory Manual w/ Rat Dissection by Marieb (This manual includes materials you will use in your physiology class) Lab Supplies: Please buy a large box of gloves. Course Description/ Objectives: A survey of the organization, structure, function and development of human anatomical systems. Students should become adept at identifying and describing the organization, structure and development of the human body across the hierarchy of cells, tissues, organs, and systems. Grade Evaluation: Your will earn your final grade based on the total points earned after completing the following graded activities: 5 Lecture Exams 100 pts each 500 points 1 Final Exam 100 pts 100 points 7 Lab Exams 50-75 pts each 410 points 7 Lab Quizzes 10-20 pts each 90 points Total: 1100 points possible Grading Scale: Letter Grade A B+ B C+ C D+ D F Points Earned 990-1100 935-989 880-934 825-879 770-824 715-769 660-714 below 660 The above numbers are point cut offs for each letter grade. There will be no “rounding up” to the next grade no mater how close you are. Your grade is based on how much anatomical information you learn. There will be no extra credit assignments offered. Graded Activities: Lecture Exams: Lecture exams will cover only the material presented since the last exam. Lecture exams cannot be made-up unless under extraordinary, documented circumstances (you must contact me within 24hrs of the missed exam to schedule a make-up). Lecture exams may be composed of a combination of multiple choice, true/false, matching, short answer and essay questions. Final Exam: The final exam will be 100 points of material from the entire course (including lab). It will be a multiple choice exam. Lab Exams: Lab exams will be given in a round robin format where the students rotate between 22-26 timed stations with ~3 questions at each station. Lab exam questions will address the identification of a labeled structure and be short answer (you must be able to spell the structures correctly). Due to the time involved in setting up a lab exam there will be no lab exam make-ups. Lab Quizzes: Quizzes are worth 10-20 points each and will be given every lab day there is not an exam. They will address information from previous lab or lecture meetings. These quizzes will primarily be composed of short answer or group discussion questions. Group quizzes are indicated on the lab calendar. Some will be open notes but they will also be timed. BE PREPARED OR YOU WILL NOT FINISH ON TIME. No group quiz make-ups. Clean up: Points will be subtracted from your total if you routinely leave your lab area messy. Attendance/ Late Policy: I do not take role on a daily basis so there is no official attendance policy. There will be certain assignments however that cannot be made up (lab exams, discussion quizzes). Also, your grade on exams will be negatively affected by missing lecture material. Please make every effort to come to class daily and on time. Exams and quizzes will be given at the beginning of every class. If you are late and miss a lab quiz you will not be able to make it up. If you are late beginning a lecture exam you will be given until the amount of time allotted to the rest of the class has elapsed (55 minutes from the start of class). Being late to a lab exam will result in you receiving a zero for some of the stations. Policy for Portable Electronic Devices: The use of any portable electronic devices, including cell phones, pagers, MP3 players, iPods, etc., during class is not allowed for any reason unless prior approval has been given to a student from the instructor or unless required for the course. If you are planning to have any of these devices in class, they must be turned off and stowed away for the duration of the class period. If you use a portable electronic device during a test, quiz, or other assessment, you are eligible to receive a failing grade on that assignment. Students who spend time in lab studying as a group do much better than those who study alone. I encourage you to set up study groups. A note about anatomy……. Anatomy is not an easy subject and you may find it to be the most challenging subject you have ever encountered. There is a minimum amount of knowledge you are expected by your college (nursing, prepharmacy and exercise science) to obtain in this course. I am obligated to provide you with this material and to test you on it. I have done my best to pare down the content as much as possible while staying within the expectations of your college but you will still find the amount of material challenging. You must put forth effort to study the material on a regular basis to be successful in this course. I highly recommend that you set up study groups to go over the material before exams. Try very hard not to miss any classes. Take careful notes of what I say in class. If you find it difficult to keep up with my lectures please use a tape recorder to record them. If you have trouble understanding a concept, please come to see me as soon as possible. I can also help you with study and note taking tips if needed. Note: This course requires dissection of preserved animals and organs (10% formalin or other comparable preservative). If you are pregnant or think you are pregnant, please consult your obstetrician as he/she may not allow you to complete this laboratory; therefore, you may need to take this course at a later date.
