Course Description/ Objectives: A survey of the functional anatomy and physiology of the
human body, including basic cellular functions, tissue organization, integumentary, skeletal, muscular,
nervous and sensory systems. The laboratory will introduce the student to the principles of anatomy and
physiology as demonstrated by microscopic studies, animal dissections, and physiological experiments.
Grade Evaluation: You will earn your final grade based on total points earned after completion of
the following graded activities:
5 Lecture Exams
5 Lab Exams
7 Lab Quizzes
3 PhysioEx Activities

The above numbers are point cut offs for each letter grade. There will be no “rounding up” to the
next grade no mater how close you are. Your grade is based on how much anatomical information
you learn. There will be no extra credit assignments offered at the end. There are at least 20 extra
points scattered across the lab exams and quizzes. Do well in lab and it will help your grade.
Graded Activities:
Lecture Exams: Lecture exams will cover only the material presented since the last exam. Lecture
exams can be made-up under legitimate, documented circumstances. Lecture exams may be composed
of a combination of multiple choice, matching and short answer questions.
Lab Practical Exams: Lab exams will be given in a round robin format where students rotate between
22-25 timed stations with ~3 questions at each station. Lab exam questions will address the
identification of a labeled structure and be short answer (you must be able to spell the structures
correctly). Due to the time involved in setting up a lab exam there will be no lab exam make-ups.
Lab Quizzes: Quizzes are worth 10-25 points each and will be given every lab day there is not an
exam. They will address information from previous lab or lecture meetings. These quizzes will
primarily be composed of short answer or group discussion questions. Group quizzes are indicated on
the lab calendar. Some will be open notes but they will also be timed. BE PREPARED OR YOU WILL
NOT FINISH ON TIME. No group quiz make-ups.
PhysioEx Exercises: You are required to finish the PhysioEx lab activities. Each one is worth 5 points.
I will explain in lab how to save your work if you need to finish at home.
Clean up: Points will be subtracted from your total if you routinely leave your lab area messy.
Attendance/ Late Policy:
•
•
•
•
I am required to take roll for administrative purposes but I do not give or take away points based
on attendance. There will be certain assignments, however, that cannot be made up (lab exams,
discussion quizzes). Also, since exams questions come from material I cover in class, your grade
on exams will be negatively affected by missing lecture material. Please make every effort to
come to class daily and on time.
If you miss a regular lecture day I do not need to know why you missed. YOU are responsible
for getting missed material from another student.
If you miss a lecture exam you must contact me within 24 hours to schedule a make-up
exam. Make up exams must be taken as soon as possible within 1 week of the missed exam (if
you miss a Wednesday exam you must make it up before class meets the following Wednesday).
Exams and quizzes will be given at the beginning of every class. If you are late and miss a lab
quiz you will not be able to make it up. If you are late beginning a lecture exam you will only be
given until the amount of time allotted to the rest of the class has elapsed. Being late to a lab
exam will result in you receiving a zero for some of the stations.
Contacting/ meeting with me:
The best way to contact me is via email. I usually check email nightly until 9pm. Do not expect an
answer to your midnight questions until the next morning.
I will generally be available to meet with students on Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30-12:30 and can
be available at many other times in the week by appointment. I cannot guarantee I will be in my office
if you just pop-in so please schedule an appointment if you would like to meet with me. The best way to
schedule an appointment is in person before or after class or by email.
Sometimes labs will end 30-45 minutes early. This is the BEST time to request review sessions for
upcoming lecture exams or talk to me about study tips. I will go over study guides, answer questions,
review PowerPoints and draw things on the board to help you to understand. This is your scheduled
time with me and you should take advantage of it.

To excel in this class you will have to spend time outside of the scheduled time period to study lab
content. The lab is open to you 24/7 so please use it. You can get in by using your ID cards in the
card-swipe on the lab (Science 104) door. Students who spend time in lab studying as a group do
much better than those who study alone. I encourage you to set up study groups.
A note about anatomy & physiology…….
College level anatomy and physiology is very difficult. It is the foundation for everything you will be
learning in a nursing or medical program. There is a minimum amount of knowledge you are expected
by your program (nursing, pre-pharmacy and exercise science) to obtain in this course. I am obligated
to provide you with this material and to make sure you know and understand it. I have done my best to
pare down the content as much as possible while staying within the expectations of your program but
you will still find the amount of material very challenging. You must take this class seriously and put
forth effort to study the material for many hours every week to be successful in this course. I highly
recommend that you set up study groups to go over the material before exams. Try very hard not to miss
any classes. Take careful notes of what I say in class (everything I say is fair game for the exam). If
you find it difficult to keep up with my lectures please use a tape recorder to record them. PRINT OUT
THE POWER POINT SLIDES – I will not use class time for you to copy down everything on the
slide. If you have trouble understanding a concept, please come to see me as soon as possible. I can
also help you with study and note taking tips if needed. I am here to help you learn the material.
The Academic Success Center: Penland 108
If you find that your usual study habits are not sufficient for doing well in this class please think about
visiting this center. They are experts in helping students discover the best way to study according to
their learning styles and offer tutors at no cost to you.
http://www.usca.edu/academicsupport/
You can request private tutoring sessions through the Academic Success Center website. I suggest
you request a tutor early in the semester.
Additional Business:
You are expected to follow the honor pledge on every assignment:
“On my honor as a University of South Carolina at Aiken student, I have neither given nor received any
unauthorized aid on the assignment/examination. To the best of my knowledge, I am not in violation of academic
dishonesty.” Cheating will result in a zero on the exam and notification to the university. Don’t expect to
get into the nursing program if you are ever caught cheating.
If you have a physical, psychological and/or learning disability which might affect your performance in this
course please contact the Office of Disability Services, 126A B&E, (803)641-3609 as soon as possible.
Policy for Portable Electronic Devices: The use of any portable electronic devices, including cell phones, pagers,
MP3 players, iPods, etc., during class is not allowed for any reason unless prior approval has been given to a
student from the instructor or unless required for the course. If you are planning to have any of these devices in
class, they must be turned off and stowed away for the duration of the class period. If you use a portable
electronic device during a test, quiz, or other assessment, you are eligible to receive a failing grade on that
assignment. IF I SEE A CELL PHONE IN YOUR HAND DURING AN EXAM I WILL TAKE
YOUR EXAM AND GIVE YOU A ZERO – NO EXCEPTIONS! I encourage you to take notes on your
laptops if you wish but please do not visit disruptive and distracting websites during class.
Note: This course requires dissection of preserved animals and organs (10% formalin or other comparable
preservative). If you are pregnant or think you are pregnant, please consult your obstetrician as he/she may not
allow you to complete this laboratory; therefore, you may need to take this course at a later date.
