ABSTRACT
The geometric distortion solution for WFC3/UVIS is known in most filters to better than 0.01 pixels from the analysis of pointed data. Astrometric
data taken with spatial scans suggest that residuals from this solution have typical magitudes of 0.003-0.005 pixels, and correlate on scales of 50-100
pixels. These deviations also appear to be stable in time, and therefore can be calibrated using apropriate data. This proposal aims at improving the
calibration of local deviations from astrometric solution via spatial scans. The observations target two regions with high density of bright stars at
several different large-scale dithers to obtain a dense coverage of high S/N trails over the majority of the detector. The data will be used to obtain a
static correction to the distortion solution that can be used to improve the geometric distortion solution. The open clusters M 67 and M 48 have been
selected to provide the highest density of stars of the right brightness for F606W (M 67) and F621M and F673N (M 48); these are the recommended
filters for optimal extraction of astrometric information, depending on the brightness of the target.
OBSERVING DESCRIPTION
Spatial scan observations of two open clusters, M67 and M48, are taken within a short time frame in order to calibrate the low-level (< 1%) residuals
in the geometric distortion solution for WFC3-UVIS in three filters used in spatial scan astromerty programs. The three filters, F606W, F621M< and
F673N, span different magnitude ranges and enable useful astrmetric observations from V = 7 to V = 16. The targets chosen offer a high density of
usefully bright stars: M67 for F606W (magnitude range V = 11- 14) and M48 for F621M and F673N (useful range V = 8 - 12). The observations are
taken in all three filters because the level of consistency across filters is currently unknown. For M48, with an effective magnitude limit V=12, we
have identified a 15-dither pattern (3 orbits) that covers 76% of the cells at a position angle of 135 deg (ORIENT 270), with X-dither positions (in
arcsec): -6.9, -33.1, 26.2, 14.4, 43.5, 8.5, 57.5, -12.0, 17.4, -24.0, -21.2, 36.3, 16.3, -47.2, 3.3. For M67, with an effective magntiude limit V=14, we
find a 20-dither pattern (4 orbits) that covers 97% of the cells at a PA of 140 (ORIENT 275), with X-dither positions (in arcsec): 39.60, -30.34,
36.42, 30.88, -14.35, 7.05, -2.88, 8.96, 26.71, 18.54, 3.90, 0.28, 3.89, -16.75, -22.13, -5.14, 13.52, -8.37, 15.69, 2.15.
