ABSTRACT
This program will allow calibrations to be derived for image displacement, spectral trace, and flux for the WFC3 IR G102 and G141 grisms, and
enable them to be improved as a function of spatial position on the detector. The HST flux standard GD-153 will be observed at 16-points over the
field-of-view, instead of at the 9 points in previous calibration programs. GD-153 is prefered over GD-71 because it is a well-isolated object, and so
will be more immune from contamination by nearby objects. However, observations of GD-71 will still be taken at the center of the field-of-view to
enable consistency checks against previous CAL programs. The image displacement, spectral trace, and throughput will be compared with Cycle 17
and 18 measurements to monitor for time evolution of these calibrations.

OBSERVING DESCRIPTION
(Adapted from CAL12357) The HST primary flux standard GD-153 will be observed at 16 different positions on the detector for each of the G102
and G141 grisms. The positions are distributed in a staggered 4x4 grid over the field-of-view, and includes a position at the center of the field. The
pattern of observations will be used to better determine spatial variations in grism mode throughput, and large-scale structure in the grism flat-fields.
As in previous calibration programs, each dispersed exposure is preceeded by two direct images, to measure the source offsets between direct and
dispersed modes, and establish the wavelength zeropoint for each dispersed exposure. For G102 (G140) observations, the F098M and F105W
(F140W and F160W) filters are used for the accompanying direct exposures. The number of FPA readouts (nsamp) is minimized for each exposure
in order to avoid as much visibility time lost to buffer dumps as possible. POSTARGs are used to produce the 16-point map within the FOV.
POSTARGs are also used at the central exposure of the pattern in order to shift the location of the first-order spectrum so that it is near the center of
the FOV.
CALIBRATION JUSTIFICATION
(Adapted from CAL12357) Standard star observations with the grisms must be used to establish the on-orbit flux calibration for the grism modes.
Large-scale variations in overall instrument sensitivity over the detector must be calibrated by mapping the variations in grism flux calibration. This
is vital for calibrating multi-object spectroscopic (MOS) observations, where targets of interest will be distributed over the entire FOV. The ratio of
the known flux distribution of GD-153 to the observed G102 and G141 spectra will produce an inverse sensitivity curve for each grism mode. This
sensitivity curve will then be used within the ST-ECF aXe spectral extraction and calibration software to place all WFC3 IR grism observations on an
absolute flux scale. The spectral trace and image offset information that will be derived from the GD153 observations are also needed as input to the
aXe software, in order to guide the extraction of target spectra. The goal is to calibrate the G102 and G141 sensitivity curves to <5% (1 sigma) over
the wavelength ranges in which the grism throughputs are more than 10% of their maxima in the +1st spectral order. Higher orders will also be
calibrated, but with reduced accuracy.
Calibration products: The inverse sensitivty curve for each grism will be used within the aXe spectral extraction software. Updates to the IR grism
throughput files used in Synphot and the WFC3 ETC will be provided using a finer spatial grid of spatial observations. The spectral trace and image
offset information will also be used in the aXe software package.

Comments: GD-153 for flux calibration of G102 (G141). 4x4 staggered pattern to fill FoV, including one pointing at FoV center. The observations at each field point consist of exposures in F098M, F105W, and G102
(F140W, F160W, and G141). Four G102 (G141) exposures are obtained at the central FOV position, using POSTARGS to manually create a small dither pattern. Single exposures in each spectral element are used at
the other field points. All field points use postargs to place the target relative to the default target location for the IR aperture, which is the only aperture available for use with the grisms. The direct exposures in the
direct-direct-grism sequence use the same offsets from the G102-REF (G141-REF) aperture, which is coincident with the IR aperture.

Comments: GD71 for monitoring of grism calibration stability. Observations are only taken at the center of the FoV. Exposures in F098M-F105W-G102, and F140W-F160W-G141 are obtained. Four grism
exposures are taken using POSTARGS to manually create a small dither pattern. We specify orient ranges in order to avoid contamination of the GD-71 spectrum from a moderately bright nearby star. We avoid
orients that are +-25 degrees from 80 and 260. Orients of 80 and 260 would have the two stars lined up horizontally (along the x-axis) in the field, which would have their spectra extending into one another.

Comments: GD-71 is a primary HST flux standard that has been used to calibrate ACS, NICMOS, and WFC3. However, according to ISR WFC3-2011-05, although GD-71 was observed in Cycle 17 and Cycle 18 to
calibrate the WFC3 IR grisms:
"The observations of GD71 suffer from mild but noticeable spectral overlap by neighbouring, fainter stars and thus are not ideally suited to carry out a primary flux calibration. It is for this reason that we opted to use
only the GD153 observations for the primary flux calibration of the WFC3 IR grisms."
