DEAN’S RESPONSE
Planning and Review Committee
Program: M.S. Clinical Mental Health Counseling
College: CEHHS
Year: 2013
Recommendations for the Program Director:
Issue/Concern: Continue to work with key faculty to review and possibly revise some courses to
reduce possible duplication.
Response from Program Director:
After an extensive program review in the spring and fall of 2013 the faculty in the Clinical Mental
Health Counseling (CMHC) program completed a significant program revision with the goal of
addressing feedback from current and past students and reducing course content duplication. As a part
of this program revision, one course has been significantly revised and a new course in supervision
was created. The program is also dropping one course from each of the five concentrations the
program offers and adding one course to the core content. In addition, the program is replacing two
courses in the program with one more comprehensive course. Currently, both the course and program
revisions and our new supervision course have been approved by the Department of Rehabilitation
and Counseling and the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences and are under review by
the Graduate Education Committee and then to the University Curriculum and Instruction Committee.
Issue/Concern: Work with Dean and Department Chair to grow the number of internship sites.
Response from Program Director:
Faculty in the CMHC program have worked diligently with the Dean of the College of Education,
Health and Human Sciences and Chair of the Department of Rehabilitation and Counseling to refine
and increase the number of internship sites available to our students. The Dean has continually
provided the resources and guidance which has allowed the faculty to create a unique and competitive
program. The Department Chair regularly meets with the program director to address any issues the
program may encounter regarding placement of students into their internship sites. At this time, three
new internship sites were added in the Spring of 2014 which is a clear indication that our efforts are
having an impact.
Issue/Concern: Work with Dean and Department Chair to upgrade counseling center equipment.
Response from Program Director:
Both the Dean’s office and the Department Chair have been strong advocates for upgrading the
counseling center equipment. The Dean and the Department Chair have repeatedly met with the
faculty in the CMHC program to discuss program needs and both the Associate Dean and the
Department Chair were active participants in site visits to fully explore the most effective ways in
which these upgrades could be implemented. At this time an extensive lab modification has been
written and approved at the University level and is now being reviewed by University of Wisconsin
System.
Recommendations for the Department Chair:
Issue/Concern: Work with Program Director to grow the number of internship sites.
Response from Department Chair: Faculty in the CMHC program continuously seek new
opportunities for appropriate internship sites. The Department Chair will continue to meet regularly
with the Program Director to support efforts to develop new sites and to address any issues that occur.
Issue/Concern: Work with Program Director to upgrade counseling center equipment.
Response from Department Chair: The Chair will continue to advocate for upgraded equipment in
the counseling center. A lab modification has been submitted that, if implemented, will substantially
upgrade equipment and provide the foundation for future improvements as technology in this area
continues to advance. The lab modification has been approved at the university level and is awaiting
review by the UW System.
Recommendation for the Dean:
Issue/Concern: Work with Program Director to upgrade counseling center equipment.
Response from Dean: During the 2013-14 academic year, several meetings were held regarding the
state of the equipment in the Counseling Center and included faculty/staff of all five programs served
by the Center. Faculty and staff took leadership to review options and various alternatives and
developed a Lab Modernization proposal that was recommended to the University by the Dean. The
Lab Modernization proposal was one of six chosen by the ASA Space Committee and recommended
to the Provost and further to the Chancellor. The Chancellor has approved the recommendations and
we are currently waiting for the UW System response.
