Council on Admission, Graduation and Academic Standards Minutes September 9, 2004 Members present: Clontz, Connelly, Gabbei, Illovsky, Mann, Maskarinec, Miller, Rock, Rothenberg Members absent: Dallinger, Mietus Ex-Officio present:Bracey, Combites, Garcia, Baily Ex-Officio absent: None Guests: Zendt The Council met from 2:00 to 4:00 in the University Union Algonquin Room. Richard Carter addressed the Council regarding a request to allow a second baccalaureate degree for the BOT/BA program in Fire Protection Technology and Fire Administration and Management. The Council approved the request. The chair informed the Council that it has been discovered that several students were admitted to the university as regular students who did not meet the admissions criteria. This discovery led to a meeting on 9/7 between the chair, the chair of the Faculty Senate, and President Goldfarb. A follow up meeting will be held on 9/16 with the results to be reported to the Council at its next meeting. The process for beginning to operationalize the policy for “Students Participating in University Sponsored Events” will begin this semester for events commencing in spring 2005. The Provost will publicize the policy. It was decided that Council minutes will appear on the electronic bulletin board and if feasible, a web site. A case involving academic dishonesty in a distance learning course and whether the instructor followed the correct procedure was considered. It was concluded that the procedure had not been followed and the instructor will be contacted again. The revised Policy on Military Service was approved. The Council was informed that the Faculty Senate will be requesting an analysis of a plus-minus grading system. A subcommittee was appointed to investigate the idea (Mann, Clontz, Maskarinec). The Council was informed that the Senate will likely be asking for an investigation into a foreign language requirement for all students in a month or so. It was also clarified that only Engineering Technology and Agricultural Business students will be allowed blanket waivers until summer 2005 for inclusion of Math 128 as gen ed. Other requests will be considered on a case by case basis. The Council approved the seventh drafts of the Academic Integrity and Grade Appeal Policies. Pending final approval from the Graduate Council, the Policies will be forwarded to the Faculty Senate. The Council will meet again on September 16, 2004 in the University Union Board Room.
