Chapter 2 Section 6 Families of Functions Algebra 2 Notes January 20, 2009 Graphing Absolute Value Using Your Calculator Refer to your “Families of Functions” worksheet to complete the following problem: Graph the following three equations on your graphing calculator. Sketch the graphs in your notes. Vocabulary Words Family of Functions: a group of functions all with common characteristics Parent Function: the original, or simplest, function with these characteristics. The vertex of a parent function is at (0, 0) Vocabulary Words Transformation: the change of a parent function 1. Translation: Shifts a graph horizontally, vertically, or both. Is the same shape and same size of the parent graph but in a different position 2. Vertical Stretch: multiplies all y-values by the same factor greater than 1, thereby stretching the graph vertically 3. Vertical Shrink: Multiplies all y-values by the same factor between 0 and 1, thereby compressing the graph vertically 4. Reflection: Across the x-axis – changes all y-values to their opposites. Across the y-axis – changes all x-values to their opposites Transformations Worksheet Work in groups of NO MORE THAN 4 ◦ Each of you will fill out your own worksheet to turn in Work on the worksheet with your group members. ◦ Try to work the problems together before coming to me for help Due at the end of the class period!
