Eastview High School En-Lightning CONNECTIONS “coming together is a beginning...keeping together is progress...working together is success!” November 2003 Volume Seven Number Two Eastview Again Named “Top High School” by Newsweek Magazine. Students continue to achieve top Reading, Writing and Math scores! Students are pursuing and succeeding with very rigorous coursework! Eastview High School students once again produced some of the highest reading, writing and math scores in the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) Tests given to all high school students in the State each year. Additionally, Newsweek Magazine has, for the second time in a row, named Eastview High School as one of the nation’s Top High Schools. Every three years Newsweek publishes a list of the nation’s top high schools, based on a “challenge index” developed to measure participation of students in challenging (e.g. Advanced Placement) academic programs. The importance of Advanced Placement education was revealed by a 1999 U.S. Education Department study that showed the best predictor of college completion was not how good one’s SATs or grades were in high school, but how many difficult courses one took in high school. Eastview High School continues to have large numbers of students pursuing their academic potential through Advanced Placement coursework. Furthermore, EVHS students are experiencing high degrees of success, measured by the yearly national exams given in each content area. Beyond the significant learning experiences, success in these exams also translates into college credit and thousands of dollars of college tuition money saved for these high performing students. Eastview High School continues to graduate some of the largest numbers of Advanced Placement Scholars (those who pass the AP exams) in the State of Minnesota. 22 Eastview High School Students Recognized as National Merit Scholars Twenty-two students at Eastview High School were recently named National Merit Scholars for 2003-2004. Eight of the students were named Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program and the remaining fourteen were officially Commended. Students are deemed Semifinalists based on their scores on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) which they take as juniors. Over 1.3 million students took the test last year and one and one-half percent of the nation’s seniors are named Semifinalists. Semifinalists must submit additional information including transcripts and SAT scores in order to be further considered as Finalists. The Finalists then go on to compete for scholarships at colleges and universities, businesses, and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Quarter 1 report cards will be sent home with students on Friday, November 21. The wall serves two purposes. First, it recognizes current state and national qualifiers as well as the season’s captains in both Speech and Debate. Secondly, it permanently honors State Tournament champions and National semi-finalists. When asked about the wall’s significance, Eastview Debate coach, Todd Hering, stated, “It gives recognition to students who deserve it and it sends a message to the rest of the Eastview community that Speech and Debate are valuable.” Co-head Speech coach, Jen McCarty, adds, “We are so appreciative to the administration and Booster club for making this wall a reality.” Anything Goes Concluded Saturday, November 1 Music and Lyrics by Cole Porter Directed by Scott Durocher Audiences enjoyed this rollicking musical comedy of fast-paced fun and confusion which took place aboard the Ocean Greyhound, “America.” Our hero and heroine, Billy Crocker and Hope Harcourt, coincidentally meet at an overcrowded party one hot summer night in the early ’30’s. A leisurely drive through Central Park and a chaste kiss put the finishing touches on an evening that speaks of promise. This Cole Porter classic musical had toes tapping to such favorites as It’s De-Lovely, Friendship, I Get a Kick out of You, All Through the Night, Blow, Gabriel, Anything Goes, You’re the Top, Take Me Back to Manhattan, and Let’s Misbehave. An evening of classic Americana was enjoyed by all who attended one of five sold out performances. Eastview High School’s Seventh Annual Homecoming Celebration took place September 19 - October 4. The week started with the crowning of a new King and Queen at Monday morning’s Royalty Coronation. 26 royalty court members were honored during the assembly. Senior Shayne Shaw was crowned King, as he received the coveted glass slipper. The slipper was a perfect fit for senior Molly Sauerbry, as she was crowned queen. Shayne and Molly were selected in an allschool vote to reign as King and Queen throughout the week. Cold weather necessitated the rescheduling of the outdoor movie to the following week. Cold weather didn’t stop the action at Tuesday night’s Volleyball game. Games and contests with prizes going to the most spirited volleyball fans were a hit. The night ended with the “$Dollar Dive$”, during which three lucky contestants scrambled for 100 dollar bills on the court. Wednesday and Thursday saw soccer games and also drew a crowd. Spirit prizes and giveaways from local area businesses got the fans cheering as the girls and boys soccer teams took on Bloomington Kennedy. The culminating pepfest on Friday afternoon brought an end to the weeklong fundraiser for the MN Zoo. Five EVHS faculty members vied for the title in the third annual Kiss the Pig contest. In the end, $300 was donated as newcomer to Eastview, Don Donais, puckered up for charity! The festivities started early on Friday night as fans came out for the Homecoming Tailgating Party. DJ music, a dunk tank, airbrush tattoos, caricatures, food, spirit sales and games were just a few of the booths lining the Lightning Plaza outside the stadium. A record crowd of over 4000 fans cheered on as the Lightning defeated the Chaska Hawks on the football field. The celebration continued with the dance on Saturday night. Over 800 dance-goers rocked the night away. Homecoming 2003 came to a close on Monday night with the rescheduled Outdoor Music and Movie night. The evening started with EVHS student band, AMPM Nuisance, providing the entertainment. The crowd grew to over 300 as “Ever After” started on the big screen. With royalty, dress-up days, a new official Homecoming t-shirt (designed and sold by the EVHS Business and Marketing classes), fundraisers, athletic events and tons of Eastview spirit, Homecoming 2003 was a success! Thanks to all of the alumni for coming home, and to the entire Eastview community for taking part in the weeklong celebration!!! The Eastview High School Performing Arts Department is proud of one of it’s own! Dan McHugh, a 2002 graduate, is in rehearsal at The Chanhassen Dinner Theatre for a major role in this fall’s production of Cats. Good Luck Dan; we’re proud of you! We’ll be in the audience! 3 GUIDANCE OFFICE ACT or SAT? Senior Year Checklist Many questions arise on which college entrance exam to take, ACT or SAT? Should I take both? When should I take them? Can I take them more than once? What are their differences? How do I register? The ACT is the most commonly accepted college entrance exam in the United States; however, most colleges will accept both ACT and SAT. There are some colleges that will only accept the ACT. Please check with the college or with your counselor on which test you should take. Our advice is if you plan to attend a four-year college, definitely take the ACT during the spring of your junior year. You may take both tests if you are looking at a wide variety of schools, particularly on the east coast. Oct. – Dec. ______ Submit completed college applications, recommendations, and application fees to the Guidance Office. Colleges want applications and transcripts sent directly from the high school. Standardized test scores must be sent directly to colleges from the individual testing company. (i.e. ACT, SAT) ______ Investigate scholarship opportunities with parents, schools, Internet, career resource center books, and on the DISCOVER Computer Program. ______ College applications due Jan. 1 should be submitted by Dec. 5. Priority Deadline: U of MN-TC - Dec. 2 ACT or SAT should be taken during the spring of the junior year. ACT ($26.00) Test Dates December 13 February 7 April 3 June 12 Reg. Deadline November 7 January 2 Fenruary 27 May 9 SAT ($28.50) Test Dates January 24 March 27 May 1 June 5 Reg. Deadline December 22 February 20 March 26 April 30 College entrance exams may be taken more than once. Most colleges will take the higher of the two scores. Some schools will start averaging scores if the test is taken more than two times; however many will continue to take the higher test. The ACT is an achievement test that measures: English, math, science, and reading. The four tests are averaged together to determine the over-all composite score which can range from 1-36. The SAT is an aptitude test that measures verbal and math aptitudes. Each test is scored on a scale of 200-800. To register for either test, a student may stop by the guidance office to pick up a registration application as well as a practice exam booklet. The application is to be filled out and mailed directly to the testing agency in the envelope that is provided. Don’t forget to include a check or money order for the appropriate fee. You will be asked to provide a testing code for Eastview High School. Our testing code for all tests is: 242-123. The testing agency will communicate directly with you on items such as test location, test admission ticket, and any missing items or fees. 4 January ______ After income taxes have been completed, pick up and complete Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA must be filled out for any chance to receive financial aid. Some colleges will also ask for you to fill out a second financial aid form called Profile. ______ Attend the Parent Seminar on Financial Aid sponsored by the Guidance Office. March ______ If you are planning to begin full-time employment after graduation, you should begin applying for jobs. ______ Make your decision on the school you plan on attending and return housing contracts and fees by the deadline. May ______ Inform the Guidance secretary of your selected college so your final transcript may be forwarded. Colleges may not allow you to register for college courses until they have received your final high school transcript. ______ Look for summer jobs. Dear Parents and Students: To help you feel informed on post-secondary issues newsletters such as this one will be sent out periodically or included with the school’s quarterly newsletter. Unfortunately, it is impossible to include all the information in a newsletter but we will try to include the most prevalent information. Students will also receive information through oral announcements, video announcements and postings on bulletin boards. Our goal is to help you feel informed; and remember, when it comes to post-high school planning, no question is a foolish question. Give us a call at (952) 431-8914 if you would like our assistance.
