Perspectives from the Principal…
Eastview High School
Exceptional achievement does not happen in isolation. At Eastview
High School our achievement is intentional and happens by design,
taking full advantage of the many supportive adults (parents, teachers
and counselors) in the Eastview Learning Community. We will continue to
challenge ALL of our students to discover their unique abilities and to achieve
– while also providing a relentless commitment to support each student on their personal
journey.
During the next few weeks our students will engage in making important academic and personal
choices. Our current twelfth graders will soon be concluding their post high school decisions,
while our underclassmen are initiating academic selections through the 2010-11 registration process, that will provide a
springboard to post-secondary opportunities and success.
We wish you the very best for an outstanding new year!
Dr. Randall W. Peterson
Principal – Eastview High School

Applying for Financial Aid
1. All financial aid begins with the (FAFSA) Free Application
for Federal Student Aid. The forms can be completed on
line at www.fafsa.gov. This application is the basis for
qualifying for any federally or state funded financial aid
program. Some individual colleges may require a CSS
Profile in order to obtain additional financial information.
2. Families and students should complete their taxes as
soon as possible. With this information, fill out the FAFSA
and send it in. It is an advantage to complete the FAFSA
early. (If you cannot complete your taxes early, do not
wait. You may use estimates, but you will be required
to provide verification later.)
3. Within 3-6 weeks, the Department of Education will send
you an acknowledgement which includes your Expected
Family Contribution and any eligibility for the Federal Pell
Grant. The EFC is the amount of money that your family
is expected to contribute toward the student’s education.
This amount stays the same regardless of the cost of the
school to which the student applies.
4. Your college(s) will use the EFC to determine your
financial need with a simple formula: Cost of the school
– EFC = Financial Need. For example, if the cost of the
school is $16,000 and your EFC is $9,000 then your
financial need at that college is $7,000.
5. It is then up to the college to try to meet that need. Your
college will then construct a financial aid package that
may include scholarships, grants, loans, and work study.
You will receive notice of that package in an Award Letter
from the financial aid office.
Just Say “NO” to
Unsupervised Spring
Break Trips
We are approaching the time of
year when your senior and sometimes
your junior student is being approached
by fellow classmates and travel agency
representatives to consider a spring break to
Mexico or other tropical destinations. Many trip packages
include such things as: 36 hours of free drinks; hotels across
the street from 5 major bars; foam dancing; and drinking
boat tours. Eastview High School does not authorize nor do
we promote these spring break trips. Eastview’s Parents
Are Key (PAK) and Eastview High School believe groups of
students should always be supervised by parents or teachers
during spring break trips. We see these trips as a serious
health and safety issue for your teen. Because nothing is
more important than the health and safety of our children, we
are including this information to Eastview parents to caution
you about a real and serious threat to your child’s health and
safety. The Star Tribune ran a 3-day series of articles about
teen drinking. Those articles created a clear, yet frightening
description of what happens when teens are allowed to go to
Mexico during spring break.
1. “More than 1,000 Twin Cities-area high school students
flocked to this mecca of drinking, parties, sun and sex
last spring, enabled by parents who don’t say no.”
2. “For seven days, most of these kids rarely will be sober,

A strong season for the
Eastview Debate Team
The Eastview debate team enjoyed a strong 2009-2010
season marked by strong participation and competitive
success. 103 Eastview students competed this year,
breaking a school record set in 2007-2008 by three. This
large group of dedicated and talented students allowed the
team to be competitive in multiple debate formats.
In public forum debate, this year’s group of seniors did
something that no Eastview debate team had ever done.
At the Central MN NFL debate tournament, three Eastview
teams qualified for nationals (taking all three available slots). Eastview had never qualified more than one team to nationals
before. A week earlier, the public forum team closed out the
MDTA championship tournament, taking the top two places
in the varsity division. National qualifiers were Michelle
McGuire and Sneha Somani, Bryan Larson and Anthony
Stagner and Sarah Malaske and Jason Vanderlinden.
In classic debate, Eastview captured state championships
in both the novice and varsity divisions. The team also won the
Governor’s Cup, the championship tournament sweepstakes
award for the strongest overall team. This was Eastview’s
6th classic debate championship in eight years of Minnesota
State High School League sponsorship. Mark Besonen
and Paige Kelly won the varsity State Championship.
In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Maddie Johnson and Caitlin
Moran represented Eastview at the state debate tournament.

League Member Schools in the
“Challenge Cup!”
Each year the MSHSL awards the “Challenge Cup” to the
school with greatest amount of post season success across
all of the activities the MSHSL offers. It is extremely difficult
for many of our teams to score points simply because many
of our teams compete in the most difficult sections in the
state making advancement to the state tournament almost
impossible. Even with that challenge each year since the
award was first introduced our teams have continued to climb
closer and closer to the top of the list. An unprecedented 26
of 39 MSHSL Activities State Tournaments had an Eastview
individual and/or team participating! The final results are in
and Eastview High School finished with 613.2 points, the 4th
highest point total in the entire state! This is the highest finish
ever for Eastview High School. Every year since the award
was first introduced Eastview has had an improvement over
the previous year finish (27th in 03-04, 15th in 04-05, 11th in
