Michel (Ret.) joins the University of Houston Law Center’s Institute for Intellectual Property & Information Law (IPIL/Houston) as Distinguished Jurist in Residence. Judge Michel will lecture at the Law Center in IPIL courses alongside IPIL faculty. His activities with IPIL also will include speaking to student groups as well as outreach to the local, regional, and national intellectual property bars. In his 22 years on the bench, Judge Michel judged thousands of appeals and authored over 800 opinions, approximately one-third of them in patent cases. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he served in the executive and legislative branches for 22 years. Following graduation from Williams College in 1963 and the University of Virginia Law School in 1966, Judge Michel served as Assistant District Attorney and then Deputy District Attorney for Investigations under Arlen Specter in Philadelphia; in 1974-1975, he was Assistant Special Watergate Prosecutor; from 1975 to 1976 he served as an Assistant Counsel for the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence; from 1976-1978, he was Deputy Chief of the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section, where he directed the “Koreagate” investigation; in 1978, he was appointed Associate Deputy Attorney General; in 1980, he became Acting Deputy Attorney General; and from 1981 until 1988, he served on Senator Arlen Specter’s staff, including as Counsel and Chief of Staff. Coming in Fall of 2012! Prof. Jacqueline D. Lipton joins the University of Houston Law Center as Baker Botts Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Law Center’s Institute for Intellectual Property & Information Law (IPIL/Houston). Professor Lipton will teach a number of IPIL courses, including Trademark Law and Internet Law. Her writing and teaching are focused in the areas of commercial law, cyberlaw, and intellectual property law, with a comparative/international emphasis. Professor Lipton has authored numerous law review articles in all of the foregoing areas, including recent publications in Northwestern University Law Review, Iowa Law Review, UC Davis Law Review, Boston College Law Review, Harvard Journal of Law and Technology, Berkeley Technology Law Journal, and many other prominent journals. She also is the author or co-author of leading casebooks and monographs in her specialty fields: Internet Domain Names, Trademarks, and Free Speech (2010); Cyberspace Law (3d ed. 2010); and Security Over Intangible Property (2000). Professor Lipton previously held positions in prominent law schools in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Her numerous degrees and academic credentials include: B.A. 1989, LL.B.
