Symptoms of each disease will be discussed. Participants will be able to describe when a referral to an Optometrist for a low vision assessment is appropriate. Details of a low vision assessment, diagnosis and treatment, including prescription of low vision aids, will be reviewed. Prescribed low vision aids will be weighed against a trip to the corner store for a pair of cheaters. Perlmutter, OTD, OTR/ L, SCLV This presentation will include an overview of how vision loss impacts daily activity performance in adults with vision loss. Selected assessment approaches utilized by occupational therapists will be reviewed and a wide range of adaptive strategies and home modifications designed to promote independence and safety will be described. A combination of didactic and hands on learning experiences will be utilized. Develop understanding of the impact of vision loss on daily activity performance and safety Gain understanding of selected assessment approaches used by occupational therapists in low vision rehabilitation Become familiar a wide variety of adaptive strategies and home modifications used to promote greater independence in individuals with vision loss Be able to provide sighted guide assistance to person with vision loss Describe the 4 leading causes of vision loss, discuss the visual consequences and review treatment options Describe an optometry low vision assessment Describe the pros and cons of obtaining magnifiers or other vision aids through a low vision optometry evaluation versus going to the corner store Describe the low vision driving evaluation and provide examples of clinic based and on the road assessments Describe and reference Oregon and Washington state laws relevant to driving and low vision List adaptive strategies and equipment and optical devices used by drivers with low vision Low Vision Drivers Rehabilitation and Training Jeff Lango, OTR/L, CDRS Low Vision doesn’t always mean a loss of driving privileges.
