financial aid is available for most students.
WE WORK HARD TO KEEP EXPENSES LOW
» More than 85 percent of transfer students receive some
combination of scholarships, grants, loans and work-study jobs.
» Students who live in 11 Kansas counties (Atchison, Douglas,
Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Leavenworth, Miami,
Osage, Shawnee and Wyandotte) automatically pay in-state
tuition, known as the Metro Rate. umkc.edu/metrorate
» Students from Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota,
Nebraska, North Dakota and Wisconsin may qualify for reduced
tuition under the Midwest Student Exchange Program.

HELP IS AVAILABLE
GRANTS
Grants are based primarily on financial need; repayment is not required.
» The UMKC Advantage Grant ensures tuition is met for full-time,
Pell-eligible Missouri residents who file the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by April 1. Transfer students must
have an associate’s degree to qualify. Student athletes are not eligible.
Medicine, Pharmacy and Conservatory students are not eligible for
the UMKC Advantage or Opportunity grants. go.umkc.edu/grants
LOANS
Parents and students can borrow money, usually at reduced interest
rates. Loans must be repaid. Among the best-known options are
Perkins, Stafford and Parent PLUS loans. go.umkc.edu/loans
SCHOLARSHIPS
Students can receive awards based on merit, financial need or special
abilities. Repayment is not required. Many are renewable.

» Academic units award scholarships to qualified admitted
students. Application procedures and deadlines vary; check with

CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT
UMKC spends $10 million annually on student employment. One
option is Federal Work-Study, a program that provides funding for

COMPETITIVE SCHOLARSHIPS
UMKC HERMAN JOHNSON SCHOLARSHIP
Competitive scholarships require action beyond applying for admission.
The awards range from $250 to full tuition. Students who are automatically
awarded the Chancellor’s Transfer scholarship also are eligible for the competitive
Curators’ Transfer and Phi Theta Kappa scholarships.
African-American AND 2.5 GPA. You can find the required application at

AUTOMATIC SCHOLARSHIPS
Transfer students who apply for admission and postmark application materials
by the priority deadlines of Feb. 15 (Fall Semester) and Nov. 15 (Spring Semester)
will automatically be considered for renewable university scholarships.
Medicine, Pharmacy and Conservatory students are not eligible for the automatic
scholarships listed here because those academic units offer their own scholarships.
CHANCELLOR’S TRANSFER AWARD
3.0 college GPA, 40 transferable hours, full-time enrollment
Award: $2,000, plus nonresident fee differential if applicable
Residency Requirement: U.S. Citizen or permanent resident
Renewable GPA: 2.75

CHANCELLOR’S MINORITY NONRESIDENT AWARD
