Reliable, scalable switching system solves vital data center issues
All governments are under tighter budgets these days. Finding ways to save
money is critical. Solutions that cut costs, improve performance and increase
production are invaluable.
The Washington, D.C. government has many vital issues to consider when
dealing with performance and increased production in their data centers.
Security, disaster recovery, redundancy and fault tolerance need to function at
the highest levels and remain unencumbered by budget constraints. The District
of Columbia (DC) government brought in the expertise of EastBanc Technologies
to ensure successful operation.
EastBanc Technologies worked with the DC government to replicate the data
centers for the demilitarized zone (the part of their network used by the public)
and continue to maintain it. As a matter of practice, replicated servers are kept
miles apart so that data is kept in several locations in case of power outages,
disasters and the like. The EastBanc team that managed and maintained these
servers was also in another building away from the demilitarized zone.
The DC government’s web application infrastructure is constantly expanding, so
the lack of remote access to the servers and networking equipment in multiple
data centers in the District of Columbia was a major concern. It led to a thorough
evaluation of a scalable, enterprise-level, remote access solution.

Evaluation results in installation
EastBanc engineers conducted an initial evaluation of Avocent products and
did the first deployment within the DC government of Avocent’s remote KVM
OVER IPTM switching systems. After a thorough evaluation of available products,
Avocent’s solution (DS1800, DSR2161, CPS1610 and DSView) was selected
as the most flexible, scalable, reliable, easy-to-install and easy-to-maintain
switching solution. In fact, Avocent is the only approved vendor for KVM over
the Internet by district offices.

“Bringing in the Avocent solution makes us look very good because we can reduce costs, improve uptime and improve performance at the

have remote access to all the servers in data centers from a single management station.

able to get to that performance level.”

Slivin also appreciates the ability to save time in maintaining the systems remotely, which ultimately saves money as well.
“We have conservatively estimated that Avocent’s software and KVM solution has paid for itself in less than six months. That estimate is
based on hourly fees of time saved to get to the servers as we did previously,” said Slivin. “The added time it has saved our engineers has
enabled us to work more productively on other issues.
Considering that we installed the Avocent solution in the summer of 2001, the system has already paid for itself three times over.”
