The University of Tokyo aims to nurture global leaders with a strong sense of public responsibility and a pioneering spirit, possessing both deep specialism and broad knowledge. The University of Tokyo aims to expand the boundaries of human knowledge in partnership with society. The University of Tokyo and Todai In English we are known as the University of Tokyo and in Japanese as Tokyo Daigaku (東京大学), which literally translated is“Tokyo University.”In Japanese, however, compound words are often abbreviated to just the first character of each component. Abbreviating Tokyo Daigaku leaves Todai (東大), which is how most people refer to us in Japan. In 2013, the University of Tokyo announced that the abbreviated English name of the University would be UTokyo. 02 Mission 03 About the University The University of Tokyo is Japan’s top university, a world-class center for research, and a vibrant academic community. In 2012, 429 students visited our partner universities. Most of these were graduate students (79%). The University hopes to increase the number of undergraduates that make use of exchange opportunities. International students In May 2013, 2,912 international students enrolled in programs at the University of Tokyo, 426 (15%) as research students and 2,486 (85%) as full-time students. Less than 10% of international students studied at the undergraduate level, while over 90% studied at the graduate level. The University is increasing the number of programs available in English at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, so we expect to see an increase in the number of undergraduate international students in coming years. Additionally, many students join us for short periods during their studies at their home universities. 16 Students can study at the University of Tokyo as either regular students (degree candidates) or research students. Admission is in April and October. To be eligible for admission to an undergraduate program, students should have completed twelve years of formal education equivalent to that in Japan, or have been awarded an International Baccalaureate by the International Bureau of Baccalaureates. (See the PEAK website for entrance requirements for that program.) To be eligible for an MA or PhD program, students should have at the time of admission a bachelor's or master's degree or a level of education equivalent to that of a Japanese university. Eligibility for admission to a combined MA and PhD program is the same as that for an MA program. Students may also be admitted if the University recognizes that they have suitable academic background and experience to undertake their studies. Admission is granted to most programs after a written examination, but there are a few graduate programs that accept students on the basis of past academic attainments, letters of reference and essays. Please contact the relevant faculty or graduate school for more details (see page 28).
