Breast screening statistics, 2010
Women between the ages of 50 and 70 are invited for regular breast screening (every three
years) under a national programme. This is intended to detect breast cancer at an early stage.
Because the programme is a rolling one, which invites women from GP practices (or geographical
areas) in a three-year cycle, not every woman will receive an invitation as soon as she is 50.
However, every woman should receive her first invitation before her 53rd birthday. Women who
are over the upper age limit for routine invitations for breast screening are encouraged to make
their own appointments at three yearly intervals.
The table below shows data on the number of eligible women who had been screened for breast

cancer within the previous three years as at 31 March 2010. These data are collected annually
from all Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) in England and held by the NHS Information Centre.
