Characteristics of a scientist’s notebook A Scientist’s Notebook is considered a legal document and they have been used in Courts of Law. A scientist’s notebook: Is individual in nature. Includes what works and what does not. Includes text, data, drawings, charts, graphs. Gives information and asks questions. Entries are a record of thoughts at the time, and are not “corrected” later. Newer ideas are added as another entry. How scientists use their notebooks No erasing, no white out. No changing anything. Corrections are added on and dated. Scientists record the time as well as the date. Scientists read notebooks of other scientists. Scientists only write in their own notebooks. Scientists encourage investigation partners to read their notebooks. Scientists record ideas they get from others- but they give credit where due. Students’ Notebooks and How they should be Used. You are expected to bring your notebook to class each day. Print your name, class period and semester on the front in large, easy to read letters. Your Science notebook is to be used for This class only. Each page is to be numbered, with date and time. Include a brief weather description. All class notes should be recorded in the Notebook starting at the front. Include your own notes and ideas. Use Cornell Two-Column Note Taking. Your notebook will be periodically graded. Make sure it is neat and legible. Assignments will be handed in separate from the notebook, so do not combine assignments with notes. Students’ Journals and How they should be used. The purpose of a Student Journal is to answer the So What? aspect of learning. Here is where you relate what you have learned to your own life. Journal entries are to be dated and time noted. Begin you journal on the last page of your notebook and work backwards towards the front. A Student Journal is a reflection of your learning. Describe what you have learned, why it is important to you, and what difference it makes to your life. Student Journals are NOT private diaries. Do not write anything in them that you do not want someone else to read.
