THURSDAY APRIL 2

advertisement
Pick one of the two problems due on THURSDAY APRIL 2 presented in on a small poster board. 2-3 people per group
ONLY (No more than 3 people!!). Every presentation must CLEARLY answer each part of the problem with work
shown. Include a graph to scale with your function. Be Creative! 
#1. The height of a punted football can be modeled with the quadratic function h = -0.01x2 + 1.18x + 2, where h
stands for the height of the football in feet and x stands for the distance across the field.
a) What is the y-intercept and what does it mean?
b) What is the vertex of the graph and what does it mean in terms of this problem?
c) The nearest defensive player is 5ft horizontally from the point of impact. How high must the player
reach to block the punt?
d) What is the balls height when it has traveled 20 yards downfield? 1 yd = 3ft.
The function can also be written in the form: h = -0.01(x-59)2 + 36.81
e) How far downfield has the ball traveled when it reaches a height of 6ft?
f) When does the ball hit the ground?
#2. One HOT summer day, you and your friends get into a water balloon fight! One of your friends climbs on top
of a building and launches a water balloon at you. The path of the balloon is modeled by the quadratic function
h = -16t2 + 48t + 448, where h stands for height in feet and t stands for time in seconds.
a) What is the y intercept and what does it mean?
b) What is the vertex of the graph and what does it mean in terms of this problem?
c) After 2.5 seconds in the air, how high is the water balloon?
The function can also be written in the form h = -16(t -1.5)2 + 484
d) How many seconds will it take for the balloon to reach a height of 200 feet?
e) Let’s say you’re 6 feet tall. How long will it take the water balloon to reach you?
f) When will the balloon hit the ground?
