welcome
ECFE offers a variety of classes, all designed to help strengthen families
through interactive play and relevant, research-backed parent education.
Classes for infants through two-year-olds focus on growth and development.
As children progress from non-separating to separating classes, they
learn through interaction with their environment.
Topic classes are for parents and their prekindergarten-aged children. These
classes encourage parents to discuss subjects of interest while children learn
through guided play and express themselves through creative activities.
ECFE combines learning and play, providing families with an opportunity to
meet other parents and their young children. Register for a day or
evening class this quarter!

The new Dakota Valley Learning Center (DVLC)
opened in January. It houses Early Childhood
Family Education (ECFE), Early Childhood Special
Education (ECSE) and Adult Basic Education (ABE).
The building’s open-concept design will allow for greater collaboration between
staff in the three different programs. The classrooms will serve all of the
programs and were designed to accommodate future needs within the programs
that share the building.

What To Do When Siblings Fight
My brother calls me his “favorite sister,” and I call
him my “favorite brother.” This might not seem
unusual until you realize that we are the only two
children in our family. Being favorites did not
happen naturally. As in most families, we had
enough bickering and arguing to cause our parents
to pull out their hair. I remember, “Mom, he’s
looking at me,” as one of my favorite phrases. He
remembers that I was the “wimpy” little sister who
got into his stuff.
by Karen Kellar, Ed.D.
Early Childhood
Family Services
Manager
If you have two or more children, you are likely
to have challenges with sibling relationships,
often known as sibling rivalry. Even in the most
harmonious homes, sibling rivalry is normal. How
you react to these behaviors plays a huge role in
either escalating or diminishing the conflict. Here
are important points to think about:
Why do siblings fight?
•Position in the family: Eldest children may feel
burdened with caring for younger siblings; the
youngest may feel the need to compete with
older siblings; and middle siblings may feel the
need for attention.
•Gender: If a child is treated better due to
gender, siblings of the other gender may feel
resentment and take it out on that sibling.
•Jealousy or competition: Children may perceive
themselves as less worthy or competent and
may compete for dominance or attention.
•Evolving needs related to development stage:
Toddlers, for instance, will protect their toys
from siblings; school-age children will become
upset based on their need for fairness;
and teenagers will act out to assert their
independence and individuality.
•Individual temperament: Mood, disposition and
adaptability all play a role in how siblings get
along. Some siblings will just be more prone
to fighting.
•Role models: When parents or other siblings
fight, children learn that this is a normal way to
get their needs met.
What should parents do to improve sibling
relationships?
•It is important to be proactive when it comes
to sibling rivalry. Teach your children the
importance of the family and caring for each
other. Children learn empathy at an early age
and can be taught to be respectful of others,
especially siblings.
•Do not dismiss a child’s anger at a sibling.
These are real feelings that can be dealt with
by helping your child see the other sibling’s
perspective. When everyone is calm, talk
through emotionally charged situations.
•Never play the role of referee or try to figure out
who is to blame. Children quickly learn that they
can get their siblings into trouble by playing the
victim. It is best to separate siblings and deal
with them individually in the same way.
•Teach your children the skills of problem solving
and conflict resolution by helping them work out
how to share a toy or take turns. Try to set up
win-win situations. Instead of focusing on the
fight, focus on solving the problem; for instance,
how to share the use of the computer.
•Recognize that siblings need time apart.
Children should also have toys that do not have
to be shared and a place to keep items that
are not “community property.” They should be
taught to respect the property of other siblings.
•Help children identify their strengths, recognize
them for those strengths and share those
strengths with siblings.
•Avoid getting caught up in trying to be fair and,
instead, address the needs of each child.
•
Give each of your children one-on-one attention.
•Hold family meetings to work out conflicts and
set rules.
• Focus on having fun together as family!
•To learn more about building positive
relationships in your family, register for the
ECFE class “Sibling Relationships” on Friday
mornings from 9-11am.
•Above all, concentrate on the behavior you
want to see. Catch them being good.
Remember, if handled well, sibling rivalry can
help children learn important life skills, including
how to value another person’s perspective, how
to compromise and negotiate, and how to control
aggressive impulses. These skills will not only help
your children in life,
but assure strong,
positive sibling
relationships.
•Do not get involved in sibling squabbles, unless
absolutely necessary. If a fight escalates to
a dangerous level, take action, since actions
speak louder than words.

choice of subjects, which could include separation
anxiety, setting limits, development or other relevant

class will investigate how out-of-control emotions can cause
family problems and how parents can help children become
aware of and manage their own emotions. Children who are
emotionally intelligent are more likely to soothe themselves
when upset, more adept at focusing their attention and
better at relating to other people. Learn the five steps of
Emotion Coaching so that you can raise the “emotional IQ”

How do you know the difference between listening

the perfectly mellow child suddenly becomes
uncooperative and unable to get along with

on “proving” their point of view? Power struggles
are like a great mystery. The real story is never
what it looks like at first glance. And, like a good
mystery, a power struggle cannot be solved until
the real culprits are discovered. Join this class to
discover those culprits. Find out how to turn
hassles into opportunities to help each child

Family School
Do you want to learn English? Do you have young children at home during the day? Family School, a
literacy program for English language learners, has four important parts: a preschool program for children
ages three to five, time for parents and children to play and learn together, parent education and adult
education. Family School meets Monday through Thursday, from 9 to 11:45am. Please call 952-431-8316
for more information. Family School is sponsored by Adult Basic Education and Early Childhood Family
Education in School District 196.
Early Childhood Screening
The screening staff looks forward to welcoming
you at the District Service Center in Rosemount!
If your child is three and a half years old and
you currently receive school district mailings,
you will automatically be sent a letter from our
program inviting you and your child to an early
childhood screening.
Call Early Childhood Screening if
• you are new to the district,
• your child is almost four years old and has NOT
been screened,
• you have concerns about a preschool child,
• you need more information about the screening
process, or
• your child is entering kindergarten in the fall of
2015 and has not been screened.
You can call the Early Childhood Screening office,
Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 3:30pm at

Advisory Council and Foundation for ECFS
The Early Childhood Family Services (ECFS) Advisory Council and Foundation
are comprised of parents in our community who have chosen to donate their
time giving back to the program. The council meets monthly during the
school year to plan fundraisers, contribute to the class planning and content
process, plan legislative strategies, as well as provide support for ECFS
teachers and staff.
It has been a busy year for the Advisory Council. In addition to the Square
One Art fundraiser this past fall and the recent annual Valentine Party, we have
been working on the second Run For Hope 5K, which is our biggest fundraiser
yet! All proceeds benefit the ECFS Foundation and are put directly back into
the ECFS program. With help from the proceeds of last year’s Run For Hope,
the Foundation will purchase playground equipment for our new Dakota Valley
Learning Center. The run is a fun family event that will be held on May 2nd at
Valley Natural Foods. See the back cover for run registration information.
For more information on how you can become an Advisory Council member or
to provide program suggestions or input, please send an email to Karen Kellar,
Program Manager, at karen.kellar@district196.org.
Which products on AmazonSmile are eligible
for charitable donations?
Tens of millions of products on AmazonSmile
are eligible for donations. You will see products
marked “Eligible for AmazonSmile donation” on
their product detail pages. Recurring Subscribeand-Save purchases and subscription renewals
are not currently eligible.
Can I use my existing Amazon.com account
on AmazonSmile?
Yes, you use the same account on Amazon.com
and AmazonSmile. Your shopping cart, wish list,
wedding or baby registry, and other account
settings are also the same.
How do I select a charitable organization to
support when shopping on AmazonSmile?
On your first visit to AmazonSmile, you need
to select a charitable organization to receive
donations from eligible purchases before
you begin shopping. Your selection will be
remembered, and then every eligible purchase
you make at smile.amazon.com will result in a
donation.
So how does this work?
You can go to http://smile.amazon.com and
choose your charitable organization.
Early Childhood Family Services is listed as:
Foundation For Early Childhood
Family Services ISD 196
Location: Apple Valley, MN
Once you choose that option, use AmazonSmile
when you make your purchases on Amazon.
After you complete your purchase, a portion
of the proceeds go to the Foundation for Early
