A.4b Synthetic Division
To thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night
the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.
-William Shakespeare
Synthetic Division
Synthetic Division is a process whereby (who says “whereby”?) the
quotient and remainder can be determined when a polynomial
function f is divided by x – c
(6x 3 10x 2  x  8)  (x  2)
Synthetic Division
Use synthetic division to perform the indicated operation.
(7x 3 17x 2 15x  9)  (x  3)
Synthetic Division
Practice: Use synthetic division to perform the following operation.
(4x 3  2x 2  x 1)  (x  2)
Synthetic Division
Synthetic division can be used to determine whether (x-c) is a factor
of a given polynomial. The remainder must be zero.
Determine whether (x  3) is a factor of 2x 5 18x 3  x  9
