Data were obtained for temperature, salinity, methane, phosphate, nitrate and si licate concentrations. 3 INTRODUCTION The data presented in this report were obtained from five cruises (Table 1) along a section extending southeast from Savannah, Georgia in the Georgia Bight area (see Fig. 1). Each of the five cruises covered the same or some part of the same section during different months of the winter and spring seasons. The first cruise (BF-03-76) was nearshore and made a "W" shaped pattern as it moved progressively southwestward . The stations were generally 3 to 4 km apart. Stations during the remaining four cruises were 5 or 10 km apart. The purpose of these cruises was to gather data with regard to salinity~ temperature, methane and nutrient values to relate to the seasonal changes from winter to spring. Also, some of these cruises served as a break-in period for our conductivity/temperature/depth (CTO ) system. None of these CTD data, however, will be presented in this text. METHODS Five sections were conducted, one nearshore and the other four extending offshore into shelf waters southeast of Savannah, Georgia. On the first cruise only surface bottle casts using Niskin bottles were made . Temperature was obtained with reversing thermometers, and water samples were taken for methane analysis and salinity. The second and third cruises collected temperature data with reversing thermometers and an XBT (expendable bathythero1ograph). Samples were taken at surface and bottom depths to determine salinity and nutrient values. The XBT was used at alternate stations. On the fourth and fifth cruises only bottle casts were made with two samples, one at the surface and one at the bottom taken at each station. All data are presented in the Appendi x. and are on file with the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC ) . CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROCEDURES A Plessey Model 6230N laboratory salinometer was used to obtain values for salinity followin g standard procedures. Temperature readings were obtained using deep sea reversing thermometers attached to Niski n bottles. Nutrient samples were taken from Nis kin bottles in 125 ml polyurethane bottles and were immediately frozen to be analyzed in the lab. A Bausch and Lomb Spectronic 88 spectrophotometer was used in a colorimetric determination of nutrient concentration. Nitrate was determined using the cadmium column reduction technique modified by Gardner et ~· (1976 ) ; phosphate was determined by the method of r~urphy and Ril ey 0962 ) and silicate was determined by the method of Mullin and Riley (1955) as modified by Strickland and Parsons (1965). Methane was determined according to Swinnerton and Linnenbom (1967 ) . XBT DATA ACQUISITION AND PROCESSING XBT data were obtained from XBT casts using a Sippican mode l LM3A handheld launcher and a Sippican model MK2A-1 recorder. Type TlO probes were used. The temperature/depth plots were manually digitized for whole and half oc and inflection points. 4 Table 1. Blue Fin Cruises in Georgia Bight-1976. Cruise Date Number of stations Sampled · 1. The XBT system has a temperature accuracy of± 0.2oc and depth accuracy of ± 2% of depth but for depths greater than 229 m, it is accurate to within 4.6 m regardless of depth. The Plessey model 6230N laboratory salinometer used is accurate to within ± 0.003 ppt salinity and has a temperature accuracy of± 0.5°C. METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS Wind data were taken on all but the first cruise . During the late winter cruise (BF-06-76) the winds were northwesterly but switched to easterly during the cruise. During the spring cruises (BF-09-76, BF-15-76, and BF-18-76) the winds were mostly out of the southeast. Wind speeds throughout the cruises stayed fairly constant at 8 knots with slightly higher speeds in March and May that lasted for short periods of time. 7 REFERENCES Gardner, W. S., D. S.
