It was established to provide dissemination of technical information and progress reports resulting from marine studies and investigations mainly by staff and faculty of the University System of Georgia. In addition, it is intended for the presentation of techniques and methods, reduced data, and general information of interest to industry, local, regionql, and state governments and the public. Information contained in these reports is in the public domain. If this prepublication copy is cited, it should be cited as an unpublished manuscript . XBT Temperature Corrections 3 v ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The authors would like to thank Amy Edwards and Pat O'Malley for digitizing the data and Landa Land for typing the text. Funding for this research and report preparation was provided by the Department of Energy under contract EY-76-S-09-0889 to Dr. Atkinson. This report is published as part of the Georgia Marine Science Center's Technical Report series issued by the Georgia Sea Grant Program under NOAA Office of Sea Grant 04-6-158-44017. 1 INTRODUCTION This report presents expendable bathythermograph (XBT) data collected in Onslow Bay, North Carolina in 1975 (Figure 1). Included are digitized data from four cruises, OBIS I-IV (Table 1} which were previously presented as contoured onshore/offshore plots in two other technical reports (Atkinson et ~-, 1976a, b). These data are also available from the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC}. Table l . Onslow Bay Cruises in 1975. Cruise AD-1-75 EZ-9-75 AD-2-75 AD-3-75 Date 6-7 3-14 13-14 8-11 Study August September October December OBIS OBIS OBIS OBIS I II III IV No. of XBT Casts 14 111 15 59 XBT DATA ACQUISITION AND PROCESSING Sippican Model T-10 (200m} XBT probes and Model MK2A-1 recorders were used to record vertical temperature structure. Internal recorder calibration checks were made at the beginning of and during each cruise . In addition, comparisons with surface bucket and reversing thermometers were made routinely, and offsets were applied as necessary (Table 2) to achieve a system accuracy of ±O.l°C. 2 Table 2. XBT Temperature Corrections Study OBIS OBIS OBIS OBIS Correction Applied I II I II IV None None None +0.4°C Temperature/depth traces were manually digitized and put into NODC format. Depths at which temperature is a whole or half degree are reported as are depths at which significant mixed layers begin and end. XBT PLOTS For each study, the XBT traces are presented in onshore/offshore sections from digitized data. However, since not all stations were along logical onshore/offshore transects, not all traces are presented graphically. 3 REFERENCES Atkinson. L.P .• J. J. Singer and L.J. Pietrafesa . 1976a.
