ALEKS is a computer program that they’ll be using to practice their algebra skills. At the beginning of class have them all take out a piece of paper or their notebooks that they can show their work on as they go (this is required). DO NOT let them move seats to sit by their friends (there won’t be a lot of work that gets done - I have included copies of the seating charts). If their computers need to be charged first have them find a plug near them. If they absolutely have to move that’s fine. However, Adonis Jones-Embry, Cory Harroun, and Thibaud Hanks are under no circumstances allowed to sit near each other. Cory and Thibaud have plugs near them, if Adonis needs to plug in his computer find a seat away from the other two. One option would be to move one of the single empty desks close to the plug at the front of the room (you can do this for any student who absolutely needs to charge their computer and aren’t sitting by a plug). Emilee Dinkel currently does not have a computer so I usually let her go out in the hall to work on one of the computers out there. If there are no computers available out in the hall then she needs to find something else to work on quietly (homework from other classes would be fine). Please walk around the room and watch the students closely. They need to be working on ALEKS at all times. I usually let them listen to music on YouTube or on a playlist on their computer as long as they pick the playlist and then don’t keep switching back to it. If you feel like anybody is abusing these privileges at any time and spending more time worrying about their music selection than being on task don’t hesitate to ask them to take off their headphones for the remainder of class. Only one person at a time may leave the classroom to go to the bathroom, etc. They have bathroom passes that the must use to leave the classroom at any time. They are on a piece of purple paper with nine passes on it. I usually cross off one square in pen or marker when they leave. Halfway through the period please give the students a five minute break to get up and stretch their legs. Their only homework for the weekend is to finish their ALEKS requirements if they didn’t do so in class. Advisory (Front Office Conference Room) These students have a big assignment that they’ll be turning in today. I will be coming in for the first 30 minutes of advisory to collect their binders and to get them started on the lesson for the day. At 9:11 there will be video announcements on channel 57. From 9:25 – 10:20 I will collect their binders and then they will have academic time. This is a time for them to work quietly on any homework they have to do. They are welcome to talk to each other and visit while they’re doing this as long as they are also working and not being distracting. At 10:20 the students will need to be taken to the UPPER East Flex Computer Lab. The lesson of the day is going to be resume writing. At that time have the students bring all of their belongings and escort them to the computer lab (they will be there for the remainder of the period) so they can work on their resumes. I will have given them handouts and instructions so they should know what to do. If they finish before the end of the class period they may work quietly on other things until the bell rings at 10:52. College Algebra (E108) This class just took a test so they will be working on their test corrections. In the folder I have included all of the tests, colored paper that they must do their corrections on, and typed up answers to the exam questions. Please hand out all of the tests and colored sheets of paper and give the following instructions: All work for corrections must be shown on the given colored paper (DO NOT change anything on the original test) Since the answers are being posted all work must be shown to receive any credit If you finish before the end of the class period you will be working on the following homework assignment due Monday: Pg 254 #9-15odd (ab only), 21-27 odd, 29 (ab only), 35-37 (ab only), 55 If you do not finish, you have one week to come in at lunch or after school to finish. All corrections must be finished and be 100% correct to receive curve points. I gave you six copies of the answers of each version of the test. Please tape these up around the room (on the whiteboards and on the cabinets, etc.) so the students can check their answers as they are working through the problems. They are allowed to talk to their neighbors about the problems, but do not let them move seats. They must stay in their own seat and work with the people who are nearest them. Please circulate the room to make sure nobody is copying anybody else’s answers. If this happens take their tests and let me know who it is. I have also asked some Calculus students to volunteer to come in and answer any questions if my students have them. They may or may not show up, but I just wanted to give you a heads up in case they come in! Please DO NOT LET ANY TESTS OR TEST CORRECTIONS LEAVE THE ROOM. Whether they are finished or not they need to turn in their tests and their test corrections before they leave. The students who do not finish will need to make an appointment with me to finish their corrections. Make sure they are all aware of the homework assignment that is due on Monday before they go. Thank you so much for subbing in my classes today!! Please record the names of any students who are behavioral problems or students who do an outstanding job for you so that I can take care of it appropriately when I return. Thanks again!
