January 14, 2011 Dear Parents, We have had a very busy week! We have settled into a routine for Writer’s Workshop and the kids are very motivated to write and are excited to get their stories published. Special thanks go out to our Writer’s Workshop helpers and our story typists (be ready...we will send the stories that need typed to you). We couldn’t do it without you! This week we continued with our winter unit and spent time learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. We will soon begin gearing up for our science unit on Liquids and Solids. Important Dates to Note: ******Monday, January 17th - No School due to Martin Luther King Day.******* Tuesday, February 1, 2011 is the 100th Day of School! We will celebrate by doing activities all week that have to do with the number 100. Our math games that week will also have to do with the number 100. Each child is asked to bring a contribution to our 100 Day Gorp. Dry cereal, small candies, chocolate chips, miniature marshmallows, or other small snack items will be mixed together for our Gorp. Before we eat it, we will be doing counting and sorting activities with it. Try to think of something to bring that no one else will think of. We want a big variety. Please have your child bring his/her contribution to school by Monday, January 31st. We are sending book orders home in this week’s Friday Folder. If you choose to order books, please return the completed form and a check made out to the book company by Friday, January 21st. Thanks! Important Next week in Treasures, our new literacy resource, is an assessment week. We will be off our normal routine Tuesday and Wednesday so that we can administer progress monitoring assessments and plan for next step instruction based on the results. We will not have spelling words or new sight vocabulary for next week. We will not be holding regular reading groups on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week due to the testing. If you volunteer for reading on Tuesday or Wednesday, you get a little vacation next week! We will need our wonderful volunteers for reading groups on Thursday, as well as our Writer’s Workshop volunteers on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday! Everything will be back to normal the following week! Thanks for your help and flexibility! Respectfully,
