August 27, 2010 Dear Parents, Thank you for coming to Parent Night to hear about what your child will be learning in First Grade this year. Your support in their education is invaluable. Your children are very fortunate to have you care so much about their education! We have had a fun and exciting week! We spent time learning more about each other and classroom routines. Mrs. Gaudy and Mrs. Rojas (our wonderful literacy paraprofessionals) and I have been doing several initial screenings and have begun to form groups. These will be finalized next week. The district reading assessment DRA II is being given to each child next week. The results of these screenings will be shared with you during Parent/Teacher conferences in mid-October. Our class has been working hard to earn paws to be put in the fishbowl in Mr. Asmus’ office. They are eligible for a drawing held at the end of each week for prizes. We are earning paws for following school rules, good listening behaviors, and being kind and respectful to others. Poetry notebooks came home today! We have been working with these poems all week and the kids are eager to share them with you. Please take a minute to listen to them read their poems aloud to you. Please sign the parent signature sheet inside the notebook and have your child return the notebook to school so that new poems can be added each week. The Poetry Notebook is part of their homework. Details about reading, spelling, math, and sight word homework were shared at Parent Night. Please see me if you have any questions. Next week we will do a fun unit on Colors. We will write about them, sort them, and graph them.
