NOTIFICATION
High-level meeting to launch the Natural Resources Information Exchange (NRIE)
Geneva, 25–26 October 2010
The Secretary-General of UNCTAD is convening a high-level meeting on the launching
of the Natural Resources Information Exchange (NRIE). The meeting will be held on 25 and
26 October 2010, in room XXVI of the Palais des Nations, Geneva. The meeting will open on
Monday, 25 October at 10 a.m. and conclude on Tuesday, 26 October at 6 p.m.
Background and purpose of the meeting
The thirteenth session of UNCTAD’s African Oil, Gas and Mines Conference, held in
Bamako, Mali, in November 2009, mandated the organization to establish a platform which
will enable countries on the continent to provide reliable geoscience data, and other
information related to the exploitation of natural resources to policy makers and investors.
Pursuant to the above mandate, a first meeting took place in Cotonou, Benin, in July
2010, where experts on natural resources management exchanged experiences in data
management in their respective countries, devised a road map for the implementation of a
NRIE and selected six countries for a pilot deployment of NRIE.
A second meeting with a high-level session will be held from 25 to 26 October 2010. The
objective is to launch the implementation of the NRIE through designing appropriate road
maps to be followed in the pilot countries, as well as defining operational frameworks and
resource mobilization strategies.
Participation
The meeting is open to all member States of UNCTAD. It may be of particular interest to
government officials, non-governmental organizations, civil society groups, the private sector,
as well as experts from international and regional organizations involved in the management of
natural resources.

in the meeting, as well as non-governmental organizations, are requested to inform the
UNCTAD secretariat of the names of their representatives by 20 October 2010.
Documents and contributed papers
The draft programme for the meeting is attached. All experts are encouraged to prepare
and submit brief papers relating to natural resources data management in their countries. These
papers will be made available at the meeting in the form and language in which they are
received.
Logistics
The meeting will take place at the United Nations Office at Geneva, Palais des Nations.
Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in English, French and Spanish. Upon arrival,
participants are requested, before entering the Palais des Nations, to collect their badges at the
United Nations Security Service, Pregny Gate entrance, 14 Avenue de la Paix. The Security
Service is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Because of the security measures in force, participants
are strongly advised to arrive before 9 a.m. in order to complete entry procedures in good time
and proceed to the meeting in the E Building (Bâtiment E) of the Palais. Participants are
requested to carry a passport or similar national identity card with them. Taxis are not allowed
to enter the grounds of the Palais des Nations and visitors will therefore be dropped off at the
