SSR 2015-11 A Resolution for: Student Vote on the Liberal Arts Core Committee Sponsored by: Campus Relations Committee First Reading: September 24, 2014 Second Reading: October 1, 2014 Vote: 18-0-0 Speaker Action: _______________________________________________________________ Eric Boisen– Speaker Date WHEREAS; the Northern Iowa Student Government has a student representative on the Liberal Arts Core Committee, according to the faculty senate by-laws; and WHEREAS: the Liberal Arts Core Committee has been operating under the assumption the student member is a voting member of the committee, though the faculty senate by-laws stipulate the student member is an ex-officio member only; and WHEREAS: The Liberal Arts Core is a major component of a student’s education; and RECOGNIZING: The curriculum is and should be under the purview of the faculty; and FURTHER RECOGNIZING: the Liberal Arts Core Committee’s voting membership is comprised entirely of faculty; and FURTHER RECOGNIZING: matters of the curriculum are exceptionally complex and it takes a significant amount of time to fully comprehend the intricacies of the curriculum; and BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED: The NISG Senate recommends that the student composition be adjusted to two seats with a staggered two year term each. The student in their second year of membership will have voting rights while the student in their first year will remain ex-officio; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: This resolution be sent to Deirdre Heistad, the Director of the Liberal Arts Core; Philip East and Chris Neuhaus, Co-Chairs of the Committee on Committees; April Chatham-Carpenter, Associate Provost for Academic Affairs; Tim Kidd, Faculty Senate Chair; and Scott Peters, Chair of the Faculty.
