SSR 2016-17 A Resolution for: NISG to support climate action and the 50by30 pledge Authored by: Senator Friel Sponsored by: Campus Relations and External Relations Committee First Reading: December 2nd, 2015 Vote: 18-0-0 Speaker Action: ______________________________________________________________ Parker Bennett – Speaker Date WHEREAS, it is the role of the Northern Iowa Student Government to speak on behalf of its constituents; and, WHEREAS, the University of Northern Iowa is the first university to sign on to the American Campuses Act on Climate Pledge, and per the White House statement on the pledge, this shall be used to “demonstrate their support for strong climate action by world leaders in Paris” during the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference; and, WHEREAS, the President of the University of Northern Iowa, Bill Ruud, has signed on to NextGen Climate’s 50by30 pledge, which urges elected officials and politicians to commit to 50-percent of energy production to come from clean sources by 2030; and, WHEREAS, climate change is an issue that this and future generations of students must accept as caused by mankind, as these young people will face the challenges of its impact and the duty to prevent future calamity; and, BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that NISG supports action on climate change as an issue caused by mankind and to be resolved by mankind; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that NISG welcomes the work of the administration of the University of Northern Iowa on this issue, including but not limited to: University Sustainability Coordinator Eric O’Brien, Provost and Executive Vice President Jim Wohlpart, and President Bill Ruud; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that NISG supports the White House’s Campuses Act on Climate Pledge and NextGen Climate’s 50by30 pledge; and, BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution should be sent to the President of the University of Northern Iowa, Bill Ruud; the Iowa Board of Regents; State Representative Bob Kressig; State Senator Jeff Danielson; Representative Rod Blum; Senator Joni Ernst; Senator Chuck Grassley; Governor Terry Branstad; the President of the United States, Barack Obama; and to anyone else at the discretion of the Speaker of the Senate.
