Close at hand were bnt 11 the Cecil Leeson Archival Saxnpbnne Cnllection, and Ceci 1 Leesnn. As a Pioneer Americfln Concert Saxophonist, Dr. Leesnn was instru~ental in developing a literature, raisin?; performance standards, and in educatinr, nther saxophonists. Because a signi ficant share nf thl2 material in the collection came into being as a resul t of Leesnn' s lifework, the history behind this part of the collection can be told only by him. tv;uch of this history had nnt yet been recorded: and, since the collection's dedication three years ago U-larch 20, 1077), these materials were still inaccessible tn saxophnne historians. Before the library wnuld be able tn make these materials available tn look. at and tn study, they \vould have to be cataloGed so the 1 i brary \vnul d knn\v \vhat is in the cn1l ect inn. Fnr my Seninr I~nnrs Project I have cataloged the nrifi na 1 mus i c manuscri pts and photor, raphs fronl the Ceci 1 Leesnn Archival c."axophone r:n] lection. (The collectinn also includes several historical saxophones, first editions of important saxophone literature, Leeson's correspondence with composers of this literature and with other musicians important to the subject, Leeson's recordin[,;s, and other memorahilia.) I also wrote a par;e or so about each of 3 the composers represented here, and have included a list () f other works wri t ten for or by Leeson. Hy main incenti ve for undertaking this project \Vas to learn more histnry of the American concert saxophone movement. By w()rkin~ about it. with Leesnn, I was sure to hear a lot I was already familiar with some of the music represented on the manuscripts, and most of the names of people in the photographs I could remember hearing in Leeson's seminars (a weekI y 1 ecture-class for his firstyear students). the t\>vO But a lot of what I heard Leeson say during years of lessons \vith him did not mean much to me a t the time. I had barel y heard the saxophone us ed in jazz, and had never heard of "concert saxophone." (I am not sure if I had even heard an entire symphony before I got to colle[~e.) Even 50, a lot of it came hack to mind; and, \vi th what he tol d me th i s time around, many loose facts seemed to corne together for me. Thi s endeavor a1 so p,a ve me s nme ins ight into the cata1op,ing process. But more important than that, the cataloging made me aware of the significance of using the language precisely. Thanks are due Drs. Cecil Leeson and I\yal ? '.h 11 j,ams for providinp the cooperation necessary for this project to succeed. Dr. Leeson made himself available even \,'hen he did nnt feel up to it, freely ?ave me more background infonnation than necessary for the purposes of cataloging, and ched:ed the articl es nn the composers for accuracy; even thou8r1 he was not nhl iged hy anv contract to serve as an advisor to t;1is project. Dr. ',Ii 11 iams took time aside from Ilis regular duties as head music librarian for Ball State's Bracken Library to he Illy Advis0r for this project. lIe made himself readily available, despite his heavy load, to advise and anS\\7er questions about the catalo{"ine process. : Ie was pat ient and had an onf, oing concern that 1 benefit frOIi) this project in ways valuable to me, as a musician. And for presenting me with the basic idea for this project r tr'ank Dr. Brian saxophone instructor for three .years. ~jinor. my C;IHDE TO UNDERS TANDIl\G CATALnGn~G (IF ~lANllS CRIPTS 6 For each manuscript a separate sheet has been prepa.red. Each sheet has captions for: AUTHOR, TITLE PAGE, (and/or) CAPTION TITLE, PHYS ICAL DES CRIPTION, and UN US lfAL FEATtfRES. The purpose of each is explained below, in the order they appear on the sheets. AUTHOR: 1 ast name firs t, followed by birth and death da1:es. ARRANGED BY: na.me of the arranger, listed as the author's name is. TITLE PAGE: a paGe, preceding the music, bearing the work's title (usually) or something else reI event to the work. What was written on the manuscript is represented as accuratel y as poss i bl e. Interpreting \vhether 1 etters were capital (when all are capital but some are larger than others) or lower case had to be left to the cataloger's discretion. Punctuation has been duplicated as accurately as possible (ex. - i f a comma seemed appropriate but jLt looked like a period, a period was typed; double underlininr, usually appears herein as single underlining). Erackets ([]) are used to indicate uncertainty about what appears on the manuscript. If empty brackets appear, there was reason to believe that something was written, but is nnw completely obscured. "[sicl" appears after unusual spell- 7 ings to confinn that they appeared as such. A slash (/) indicates the end of a line on the manuscript. (On F.t cataloging sheet, the end of a line, or a dash hyphenating a word split between lines, are not representative of anythinr,) . A period (.) following the last slash indicates the end of the title (any punctuation to the left of a slash appears on the manuscript). If more than one TlTI.E PACE appears, the first one is given under the capt ion, "COVEH PAGE." CAPTION TITLE: a title appearing at the head of the first page of music. c:: ( "ee second paragraph under TITLE PAGE). PHYS I CAL DES CR I PTT ON: certain characteristics of the manuscripts, always arranged as follows: which part: if a score or a piano part (which assumes the solo line is present), it is entirely in concert pitch, unless otherwise stated. number of pa.ges: counts front and back sides (unless it is a single sheet written on one side only, or if it is an accordian folded Ozalid part printed on one side only) and includes blank pages and soft covers. size: in centimeters (em), height first, then width. kind of paper: brand of printed staff paper; if it is dra,,,,n staff: or if it is a mechanical copy (usually 8 Ozal id, a bl ue printing process). tell s who made the copy. ivlechanical copy "by" lvlechani cal copy "of" tells the brand of printed staff paper used for the original. number of staves per page: if the number of systems is also listed, it implies that they are printed (not added by the copyist). how it is bound: accordian fold (one long sheet print- ed on only one side); r,amble hinge (a series of gummed cloth tape bindings (each holding two sheets usually), all· held together by string): cloth binding (like Gamble hinge but no string); pages folded (but otherwise 100sE~); in a cover: taped (if it says "'-Jere" or "'vas taped," the tape no longer holds it together); strinG (other than gamble hinge); etc .. whose \vri tine; and in '\lhat medi urn: "holograph" means the author \vrote the part out (mechanical copies have only a "copy of" t11e author's holograph); "penscript by ... " means it was handwritten in ink by the person designated. if dated somewhere other than on the TITLE dated: PAGE or in the CAPTION TITLE, the date and place (if given), appear as they were written (except for commas that were added where lines ended), followed hy the par;e where they appear, in parentheses. For mechanical copies it says "(on orir;inal)" if it \vas not added later in ink or pencil. NOTE: BRACKETS CECIL LEESON.
