Assistant Professor

Required text :

1. Schultz & Schultz (2003). A history of modern psychology (8th edition). Belmont, CA: Wadsworth.

2. Hock, R. R., (2002). Forty studies that changed psychology—Explorations into the history of psychological research (4th edition). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall.

Course Description :

Welcome to History of Psychology! This course will be an introduction to the history of psychology based on the chorological time. Throughout the course, you will learn the history of psychology from past to present, the great schools of psychology, major figures in the history of psychology, and some leading psychological research that shaped the field of psychology.

Class Requirements:

Regular attendance and participation (10 points): You will be required to sign in for each class. If you are ill or must miss class, please notify me in advance. You need to provide written documentation that explains your absence. However, you will be penalized by losing one point per class. In addition, you are also expected to actively participate in discussion, share your reactions, thoughts, and ideas, and provide constructive feedback to your colleagues’ presentations. Extra credit (no more than 6) will only be given through participation in possible research studies, quizzes, and/or homework assignments that will be announced in class.

Class presentation (10 points): Each group (4-6 students) needs to present one of Hock’s studies. Your grade will be based on the following criteria: (1) the oral presentation (e.g., quality, clarity, and accuracy), (2) the effectiveness of the presentation (e.g., time management, organization, and presentation style), (3) the quality of discussion (e.g., the quality of discussion questions, leading discussion, and responding questions), and (4) the effective use of teaching technology or other equipment. The grade will be the same for all group members.

Each presentation should take about 30 minutes, 10 minutes for presenting Hock’s study and 20 minutes for discussion.

Grades :

Grades will be based on 4 multiple-choice exams (20 points for each exam), the presentation (10 points), and attendance and participation (10 points). Grades will be assigned on the following points scale:
