New AT Teaching Lab
The dream of a dedicated research and teaching
laboratory became a reality in February of 2014.
The newly renovated 2nd floor of the Human Performance Laboratory was transformed into a terrific teaching and research laboratory equipped
with sophisticated research instruments as well as
equipment and tools necessary for athletic training students to learn and become skilled for careers in athletic training and other allied health
professions. The new laboratory was recently
featured in a UDaily story — http://www.udel.edu/

News & Notes from the desk of:
Dr. Tom Kaminski, Director of
Athletic Training Education
Wow I cannot believe what has happened over the course of this past
year! It has been a wild and adventuresome ride to say the least. Now
that graduation has concluded and
another group of UD ATEP students
have departed for the “real world” I
have a few minutes to reflect and
share some exciting news that will
help propel UD ATEP forward into the
future.
So much has happened this past year
I’m not sure where to begin. I’ll start
by announcing the addition of our
newest UD ATEP faculty member Dr.
Thomas “Tom” Buckley. Tom along
with his wife Beth and young son will
move to Newark in July. Dr. Buckley
has served as an associate professor in
the Dept. of Health and Kinesiology at
Georgia Southern University since
2007 and has lead their graduate program in Athletic Training the entire
time. His externally funded research
focuses on the coordination of locomotion, posture, and balance in patient populations with central neurophysiological deficits, most notably
mild
traumatic
brain
injury/
concussion. Dr. Buckley has extensive
educational experience and will be
teaching the KAAP448 Organization
and Administration of Athletic Training
class in support of the undergraduate
ATEP as well as a graduate level class
to support the graduate Sports Medicine program.
The faculty/staff/students are excited
to have Dr. Buckley “on board” as a
Blue Hen where his contributions will
work to strengthen our entire educational program. I encourage all alumni
and friends to reach out to the newest
member of the UD ATEP family and
welcome him.
Equally important was the addition of
the newly renovated AT Research/
Teaching Lab on the 2nd floor of the
Human Performance Lab. Since 2006
the 2nd floor of the HPL has housed
the biomechanics laboratory under
the direction of Dr. Richards and Dr.
Royer. When the new STAR campus
opened in January 2014 the space
became available for ATEP and renovated into a state-of-the-art research
and teaching laboratory. The renovation was complete and ready for students as the Spring 2014 semester
began in February. The facility includes convertible plinths, motorized
hi-lo tables, taping tables, therapeutic
modalities, multimedia projection
equipment, hydrotherapy area with
whirlpools, ice machine, sink, and hydrocollator, as well as plenty of storage space. All UD ATEP classes that
have laboratory components will be
taught in this facility beginning Fall
2014 ---- and yes that includes Keith’s
taping & bracing and intro to AT classes! Special thanks go out to our colleagues in UD Athletics for allowing
our lab classes to take place in the UD
Athletic Training facilities for all these
years. Their flexibility and patience
especially these past 5 years has been
appreciated. I would also like to
acknowledge the input, guidance, and
3
help during the entire renovation by
our Clinical Coordinator Jeff Schneider
and ATI Coordinator Andrea Di Trani.
Lastly, a special THANK YOU goes out
to our colleagues in UD Physical Therapy who generously donated the hi-lo
tables and plinths to be used in the
facility. Additional classroom space
was also secured in HPL131 (some will
remember this as the old Ex Phys Lab).
The small classroom is perfect for UD
ATEP lecture classes between 20-25
students in size. I encourage all to
stop by and see this magnificent facility. There is also a UDaily related story

The 2013-14 school year also included
some staffing transitions in UD Athletics that directly impacted UD ATEP.
The departure of John Smith allowed
for Dan Watson (UD ATEP 1995) to be
promoted to Head Athletic Trainer.
Dan has assumed the role and has
transitioned smoothly and brought
about several changes to greatly enhance the sports health care delivery
process for UD student-athletes while
at the same time improved the clinical
experience for UD ATEP students.
Best of luck Dan! Courtney Butterworth (UD ATEP 2003) also departed

Dr. Barlow
At first most of my work in anatomy involved the preparation
of anatomical prosections which would carefully be prepared
and presented to students for study in 220. Students seemed
to really enjoy and value the opportunity to study the real
thing in this manner. For some at first it was perhaps more out
of curiosity than for any other reason. For whatever the reason, students certainly found that it greatly enhanced their
understanding of musculo-skeletal and nervous-circulatory
anatomy. This was of particular importance in the clinical
setting. With this success I sought to create an experimental
lab based course that eventually became what is now called
Functional Human Anatomy (KAAP420). It was initially offered
for four credits and was limited to seniors only who possessed
a 220 prereq. It was quite a surprise when the experimental
offering attracted a lot of student interest. I thought for sure
that it would never really last because of the scarcity and cost
of biological materials combined with the natural aversion
that any student would experience in handling human biological specimens.
Functional Human Anatomy
A Historical Retrospect …………
With this initial success, 420 became a reality and Coach Hannah never flinched as we were soon purchasing a limited number of cadavers for teaching every Winter Session. When Doc
Rylander and Professor Keith Handling successfully created
the major in Athletic Training, 420 was adopted immediately
as an integral part of the ATEP curriculum much to my great
joy and pleasure. To accommodate the heavy work load of
student trainers during the fall/spring semesters, 420 was only
offered during Winter Sessions as a requirement of the program.
Coming from Indiana University in the early 1970’s with a
doctorate in both Biomechanics and Human Anatomy, I was
hired by Coach/Department Chair Bob Hannah in the former
Physical Education, Athletics, and Recreation Department.
The department was better known as PEAR at that time with
Coach Nelson as the Dean. Initial responsibilities were to
take over the direction of what was the beginning of a Biomechanics/Human Performance Lab originally located in
what is now the Computer Classroom of the Little Bob. Professors Bob Neeves and Keith Handling were my highly respected colleagues involved in team teaching human anatomy and physiology or what is now KAAP 220.
In the early 90’s the PT Department established an anatomy
lab in 007 McKinly for the instruction of first year PT students
who would use the facility for a period of about 5 weeks just
prior to the start of each fall semester. This enabled the 420
course to move out of the Little Bob and into the basement of
McKinly Lab. Courses in 420 were now offered fall, winter,
and spring. The lab had poor air conditioning so the summer
sessions were definitely not appropriate other than for PT
students. Note that most student trainers could only enroll in
420 during the Winter Sessions. Seniors in Athletic Training at
that time were experiencing what was really a 5 credit course
of cadaver dissection accomplished in a stressful and very
short five week period. It consisted of 14 formal laboratory
sessions with lots of out-of-lab independent study combined
with daily lectures on anatomy.
With the influence of Doc Roy Rylander, the venerable Head
Athletic Trainer at UD and the founder of the Athletic Training Education Program, I was gently, as only doc could do it,
encouraged to offer a more in depth course of instruction in
human anatomy with a laboratory focus. I jumped at the
chance even though it was my impression that he envisioned a lab based course with articulated skeletons and a
few plastic models of extremities and joints lying around.
Following my extensive experiences with medical school
students in gross human anatomy at Indiana, I felt that this
was definitely not the way to truly teach students anatomy
who possessed a strong passion for the pursuit of athletic
training/sports medicine. With a little arm twisting, I convinced Professor Neeves to accompany me to travel up to
A.I. DuPont Institute where we able to harvest a few girdles
and extremities from cadavers that were not currently in use
by the medical residents. Returning with them in the trunk
of my car to the Little Bob, we set up the first Gross Anatomy Lab on campus in what is now the Computer Lab. The
windows of that lab were not in existence at that time but
the formalin and phenol orders would definitely greet all
When Dr. Kaminski took over the Directorship of the ATEP, he
asked if it would be possible to move the HPER 420, now KAAP
420, to the fall semester to accommodate his seniors. At first
we tried to do this by offering the labs starting at 8AM on a
weekly basis. Due to the rather poor ventilation of 007
McKinly, a number of Biology professors who occupied labs
just down the hallway from 007, would complain somewhat
vigorously. In addition, the day time scheduling of labs proved

to be extremely difficulty for student trainers to manage
with their heavy academic schedules. About this same time
Dr. K asked if the lectures could be moved to Monday/
Thursday evenings.
Apparently taking a gross anatomy course for Athletic Training majors during the fall/spring was just not possible with
the heavy team/clinical responsibilities students assume
during the academic year. He probably thought I would
strenuously object. That was not the case as this change
represented a great opportunity to expand the course to a
more realistic and well space out 24 laboratory sessions at
five credits along with what now is a small laboratory fee/
student.
SUMMARY:
In 2008 I was asked to assume the responsibility for the Directorship of the Medical Scholars Program within the College of
Arts and Sciences. This responsibility was followed by a more
recent request to serve as the first Director of the Center for
Premedical/Health Profession Studies reporting to the Office
of the Provost/Deputy Provost. My response to both of these
requests was a definite “yes” as long as I could continue to
teach the KAAP420 Functional Human Anatomy course. Without question I felt that the opportunity to continue to offer
this course to students was extremely important in helping to
prepare them for their future professional endeavors as Athletic Trainers and/or other healthcare professions. Recognizing that I have been teaching anatomy for what will be the
start of my 41st year this coming fall, I was recently asked by
colleagues if I had any plans to retire. My response was definitely “no” as long as I could continue to offer Functional Human Anatomy on an effective basis to future Athletic Training
and Exercise Science majors.
Course Goal AS IT EXISTS TODAY:
The goal of the course is to provide students with an understanding of the gross (dissectible) structures of the human
body, particularly of the girdles and extremities and to relate
this knowledge to the fields of Exercise Science, Athletic
Training, and to related medical fields where clinically appropriate.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Anatomical individuality, functional significance and human
performance interpretations will be examined through the
detailed and systematic investigation of muscular, skeletal,
circulatory, and nervous systems. Structural and functional
kinesiology of the extremities and their girdles will be
stressed dealing with the inter-relationships between form
and function of tissues, organs and organ systems of the
human body. A teaching approach will be utilized that fosters student enthusiasm, critical thinking, and a love of the
biological sciences. Students will be provided with a core of
anatomical knowledge acquired both in lecture and laboratory settings. Laboratory experiences will, when possible,
emphasize the meaning and significance of musculoskeletal
movements and will utilize human cadavers, prosected human specimens, models, EMG and electro-physiological
demonstrations, X-rays, dry biological materials, interactive
videodiscs, and other instructional aids.

UD ATEP Class of 2008
Derek Rivera—UD ATEP Class of 2008. I grew up in Camden New Jersey; one of the toughest cities to grow up in
in the United States! There is a lot of crime and violence
and the graduation rate is very low. To keep myself off
the streets, I started playing baseball at a young age,
where my love for sports began. I was fortunate enough
to play throughout high school. During my senior year of
high school I was still unsure of which major to choose
for college until my baseball coach told me about a career
in athletic training. As soon as I visited the University of
Delaware I knew I wanted to attend and be a Blue Hen
for life! I am proud to say that I am the first person in my
immediate family to go to college. Even though Delaware
was one of my most challenging experiences academically, it was one of my best learning experiences. It truly
prepared me for the real world. Through hard work and
dedication, I had the great privilege to work with the Buffalo Bills and given the opportunity to work two preseason camps with their Athletic Training Staff. It was such
an “eye opener” working at the highest level and it gave
me motivation to be the best athletic trainer that I could
be. After graduating from UD, I pursued a GA position at
Florida International University, working as an ATC at
Hallandale High School; an inner city school that reminded me a lot of schools in my hometown of Camden, NJ.
Soon after completing the degree requirements for my
master’s degree at FIU the contract with Hallandale HS
was not renewed and so as they say “I was in the right
place at the right time” and began my tenure as their
Head Athletic Trainer. I am proud to say I am in my 6th
year in Hallandale and loving every moment. I am now
currently starting a Heath Science program in which I will
be teaching students about health occupations including
athletic training/sports medicine. My goal is to help students go to college and better themselves despite their
circumstances and surroundings. I am happy to see such
a high interest in athletic training at the high school level.
I hope to inspire future athletic trainers and prepare
them for careers in athletic training.
