This leads to more review at the beginning of the year, instead of new instruction. In essence, we are finding ourselves being pushed back from the starting line. As a staff, we have had thoughtful discussion on how to address this issue. With this in mind, we have put together a summer packet for all of our students to complete. There are 3 options: If your child is promoted, s/he is to complete all of this year’s objectives on the IXL mathematics website at a 70% rate. All of our students are familiar with this site. The ELA requirement is to read one book from the Accelerated Reader list and pass the A.R. quiz upon their return in the fall. Your child can use notes from the A.R. book on the quiz. To keep up their writing, we are asking for them to write in a journal over the summer and turn it in for extra credit in the fall. The incentive for this group is a drawing for 1 of at least 9 iPod Shuffles. If your child is placed, s/he is to complete all of this year’s objectives on the IXL mathematics website at a 70% rate. The ELA requirement is to read one book from the Accelerated Reader list and pass the A.R. quiz upon their return in the fall. Your child can use notes from the A.R. book on the quiz. S/he will also have to complete an additional book report on a book of his/her choice. To keep up their writing, we are asking for them to write in a journal over the summer and turn it in for extra credit in the fall. The incentive for this group is they will be enrolled in both elective classes and will not be enrolled in a support class unless the parent requests it. The Coloma Middle School community is committed to fostering success for each student by providing a support system that ensures high academic standards, responsible behaviors, and educational growth, while promoting enriching opportunities to develop as individuals. 2012 Coloma Middle School Scott Pauley, Principal Phone: (269) 468-2410 274 South West Street Rita Moore, Asst. The ELA requirement is to complete our ELA packet that will be given to them Friday, May 31, 2013. They are to return it completed during the week of August 23 rd. Your child has additional information given to them. The incentive for this group is they will be placed into the next grade. If you are in 5th grade going into 6th and 6th grade going into 7th, this packet counts as 1 normal assignment in both Math and English Language Arts for the upcoming year. If you are in 7th grade going into 8th it does not count for any assignment. A summer packet is a growing trend in schools to address what some have called “The summer brain drain.” We deeply appreciate your support in the endeavor.
