Letter from Mrs. Boguth Coloma Superintendent
Welcome to McDaniels Field, home of the Coloma Comets! We are pleased that you could join us
tonight for not only a football game between the Coloma Comets and the Edwardsburg Eddies, but also
a tribute to the many men and women that have fought for our freedom. The 2011 Coloma football
team has been working hard to plan this special event for tonight in honor and support of the Wounded
Warrior Project. On behalf of the Coloma Board of Education and the Administration, I would like to
thank the many community members, businesses and organizations that have helped our football
program by supporting our student athletes. I am proud of the work that our team has done to support
such a great cause and I feel blessed to be able to say that I am from Coloma, a School District that has
such great students that genuinely care about other people. Good luck to both teams tonight and thank
you for your support so that we may honor so many who have given so much!

A letter from Coach Eddy
As the Football coach for Coloma, I believe that my number one responsibility is to build young men of
character. Often, young men do not see the bigger picture of life. I feel that it is the coaching staffs’ role to
help them experience it. Another value we work to instill is leadership. We have the advantage to play at the

than when their kids were born, my aunt
saw him cry and she said he cried like
a little school girl for an hour. He'd
been holding it all in for nearly 50
years.
After seeing that movie he told my aunt
that even though Private Ryan was
portrayed in Europe, it was just like
that in the Pacific. People right next
to you were getting blown up with body
pieces everywhere.
Over the next couple of years, before
he passed away, he finally told his
family stories about his three year

stay in the Marines. He landed with
the Marines at both Iwo Jima and on
Okinawa. He was in hand to hand combat
with Japanese soldiers numerous times
and was once bayoneted through his
hand. Back then, that wound wouldn't
even get you a purple heart. They
wrapped it in gauze and handed him his
rifle and he went right back to the
fighting.
He had humorous stories from the war
too but most of them were sad. He just
locked them away until he saw that
movie and then it all came pouring out.
Never saw him get mad or say a cross
word in the 40 years I knew him. He
was maybe 5' 7" and probably about 140
pounds when he was in his twenties
during the war judging from photos I've
seen of him during that period. He was
bald with a pot belly when I was born
and knew him. No way I could picture
this man as a warrior. He was a Teddy
Bear.
When the war was officially over, there
was a Japanese officer that was running
a prison camp on one of the nearby
islands and he had cannibalized some
American POW's during the war. The
Marines wanted him bad.
