Mark Carl Twain Sandburg CMS Jefferson Classroom Courier Ashmore Winter Issue Created by: Charleston Middle School March 2016 Hi Ho, Robinhood! On Thursday March 3rd and Friday March 4th, 2016, seventh and eighth graders at Charleston Middle School preformed their yearly musical. This year it was Hi Ho, Robin Hood!, a retelling of the classic Robin Hood legend. The musical was directed by Ms. McDevitt and Ms. Pantle, two teachers at CMS. There were thirty-one student cast members. The five musical numbers were accompanied by a live orchestra. “I knew the musical was gonna be good, but a live orchestra is amazing.” said Ryan Kolling, a seventh grader in the show. Inside This Issue: It took lots of work to have Robin and his merry band of outlaws vanquish the evil Sheriff of Nottingham. “Practice for Hi Ho, Robin Hood! is so much fun! I have learned a lot. I’m so glad that I have been given the opportunity to be a part of something this amazing!” said Rachel Mellott, an eighth grade member of the musical cast. Auditions were in late December and rehearsals started in January. The actors and actresses rehearsed for two hours most days after school. In late February, the rehearsals changed location from the CMS chorus room to Charleston High School’s Swickard Auditorium, where the performances took place. All the hard work payed off in early March on the nights of the show. It was a performance to remember! by Taylor Fleming CMS 2 CMS 3 Jefferson 4 Carl Sandburg 5 Ashmore, Mark Twain, 6 & Carl Sandburg CMS 7 CC Staff Photo & Jefferson 8 Have a Gifted Education The seventh and eighth grade gifted history class is a place where learning is made fun. This class takes place during the thirty minute lunch period every Friday in the library in a back corner nicknamed “The Alcove”. This class was recommended to the participants by the gifted ed. Teacher Mrs. Cline. This class talks about interesting topics within the social studies curriculum. The instructor is Sam Bickford's (seventh grade participant) dad Dr. Bickford works hard to find topics within the students' interest. They learn about many things that include animal transportation from different countries, slavery, and crazed lunatics. The stu- fantastic dents say it is a fun way to learn about historical events. On some days you can go from animals from Europe to figuring out how vicious a zebra actually is. The time spent here is precious, actually learning about something of interest to these students.
