Math 010 (Beginning Algebra) COURSE POLICIES
E-mail: You will receive frequent email updates and announcements from your instructor. These will be sent to your
Stout email account only, even if you enter another email address during the software registration.
Homework: There will be a graded, online homework assignment given on each section covered. You will get immediate feedback
on each homework problem, and incorrectly worked problems can be repeated (with a new version provided by the computer)
until a correct solution is obtained. Tips and examples are available on line for each homework problem, in addition to the help
available from your instructor and the teaching assistants in the Math TLC open lab in JHSW 203. Homework assignments must be
completed before the start of class the next class day after the section is covered in class. Homework may be done at locations
other than the Math TLC, but if so, be sure to leave extra time before the deadline in case a computer glitch prevents your work from
being transmitted immediately. To be on the safe side, you may want to make a habit of starting your assigned homework during the
time allowed for this during the scheduled class periods and finishing the work during open lab hours in the Math TLC where staff is
present to help.
Quizzes and Tests: Quizzes and Tests must be taken with a proctor in your classroom or the Math TLC testing lab.
Quizzes are given after each set of 4 to 6 sections, and tests at midterm and during finals week. Quizzes and tests may
be taken before the scheduled test date if the student desires, but the early date must be scheduled with the
student’s course instructor beforehand, and the test must be taken with a proctor in the Math TLC testing lab.
Timed practice quizzes/tests will be available for each quiz and test. These will be similar to, though longer than, the
actual tests. You’ll be allowed unlimited tries on practice quizzes/tests and can review the results of each. Your highest
score on each practice quiz/test will count a small amount towards your course grade.
GATEWAY: There will be an eight question (no calculator) GATEWAY quiz that must be passed with a score of 100%,
along with a passing course grade before each student can move on to their next math course from Math 010. This
GATEWAY quiz, which covers basic fractions and order of operations, will be administered twice during class sessions.
However, students who don’t pass by the second in-class quiz will be allowed more tries outside of class time after
meeting one-on-one to review with a teacher or tutor, until the student is able to reach the required 100% score.
Makeup Rules: No makeup work will be allowed on homework. If a quiz or test is missed due to a serious and
verifiable circumstance, a makeup may be given. Any student who misses a quiz or test and has a legitimate excuse
must provide documentation to the course instructor within 2 days of missed work. A makeup will be scheduled if
the instructor approves the excuse. Students who must miss work or tests due to official University business must make
arrangements for makeup work before classes are missed.
Attendance Policy: Attendance will be taken at every class session, and points will be awarded to students who are
present when roll is taken. Participation in a class activity or completion of a short problem or homework quiz may be
required to earn attendance/participation points.
Cell phone policy:
CELL PHONE CALLS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE MATH TLC.
Your cell phone needs to be out of your sight (and ours), and the ringtone turned off.
A cell phone violation could cause your cell phone to be retained by staff until you leave the premises.
