The Time is Now Home of the Greyhounds and Zias Dedicated to providing programs and facilities that surpass the expectations of our student-athletes, our University family, our fans and our community. From the President Dear ENMU Family, I am very excited about having a new on-campus stadium. I am certain the facility will generate a new sense of enthusiasm from our students and the community, and will enhance an already strong athletic program. ENMU’s athletic heritage has a proud history and tradition of graduating distinguished alumni. Today’s student-athletes carry on this tradition of excellence in the classroom and with their teams. A vital athletic program is important to the University as a whole. The new stadium completes the campus. Thanks for your support. Dr. Steven Gamble University President From the Stadium Campaign Chair Dear ENMU Supporters, 2014 and 2015 have been been very good for the ENMU Foundation and our efforts to raise funds for the new Stadium. The cost for the new Stadium has increased to $15.5 million so that ENMU can build a state-of-the art multi-purpose facility. With this increased costs, the Stadium will have increased seating, a new separate locker room for the Portales Ram Football team to use, additional room for concessions, a hospitality level and much, much more. In 2014 the voters in the Portales Municipal School District, which includes the city of Portales and the surrounding areas of Roosevelt County, voted an overwhelming 86 percent in favor of approving a new bond that will provide $1 million in funding toward the costs of the stadium. With that $1 million and other generous support, the ENMU Foundation has surpassed $14.3 million of our $15.5 million goal. ENMU needs this new stadium, and the ENMU Foundation is hoping that supporters like you will consider making a contribution to help us match the funds pledged by ENMU students and the citizens of Portales and Roosevelt County. Please take a moment to read through this material and consider becoming a donor, an investor and partner in the new stadium. Stephen Doerr (BS 77) ENMU Foundation President Stadium Campaign Chair The Time is Now for a New Stadium ENMU and the state of New Mexico have made a sizeable investment in the Portales campus infrastructure. Since 2001, over $124 million in campus improvements have occurred. Many buildings on campus have undergone significant renovations and improvements. The entire campus looks amazing. The facilities are energy efficient and designed with a focus on what is most important to help our students achieve a quality education. New Stadium Opening Fall 2016 The facilities featured here highlight significant building projects on campus. The Golden Library is next on the docket for renovation and modernization. The Golden Library will be part of the 2014 and 2016 New Mexico General Obligation Bonds. It is time to complete the campus and bring the stadium back to where it always belonged … on campus. The building of a new stadium oncampus has many benefits for the athletic department as a whole but directly affects Greyhound Football, Zia and Greyhound Soccer and Zia and Greyhound Track and Field. The soccer programs are fairly new programs to Eastern and will now have the ability to play at night in the stadium. Greyhound Football (conference champs in 2013) will be able to recruit more competitively from all over the country. Track and field will for the first time be able to host collegiate meets. “As a native of this area and former coach, I am pleased that football will again be played on campus. We will no longer have to leave the campus and Portales city limits to play home games. This new stadium will be a big break for all the coaches and teams that get to play in it. The new facility will aid in the recruiting of quality players. Located on campus, this new stadium will afford a modern and safe place for fans and students to attend many activities and sporting events. I urge all alumni and friends of Eastern to support this worthy project.” Carl Richardson (BA 48) Health and Physical Education Dept. Director1980-1986 Coach of Football, Baseball, Golf, Tennis and Track 1954-1963 ENMU Football 1940 “I have very fond memories of my time at ENMU. I was able to receive a quality education and develop lasting relationships with my coaches, professors and fellow students. It was great to see how well the football team performed in 2013 and I look forward to seeing continued success in the future! I am very excited to see the University invest in a new football stadium in Portales. I believe the new stadium will provide a great atmosphere for games and will be very beneficial for recruiting. I am grateful to be a Greyhound and look forward to coming back soon to see the new stadium!” Jeff Howard (BS 06) Minnesota Vikings Defensive Assistant, Current ENMU Football 2001-2004 “The athletic teams, the band and the cheerleaders will all have a place for building pride and spirit. The stadium is the one place our students, student organizations, fraternities and sororities all become one and stand together unified with excitement for Eastern. I know of nothing else that can showcase our University better to the public.” B. B. Lees (MA 57, BA52) Athletic Director and Coach of Football, Golf, Baseball, Tennis and Track 1957-1993, 1996-1997 ENMU Football 1948, 1950, 1951 Portales Municipal Schools is excited to be a partner with Eastern New Mexico University to build a multi-use stadium in Portales. Even though this is a partnership between PMSD and ENMU, it is much more than that. PMSD is only able to join this effort because the Portales Municipal School Board and the residents of this school district see the value of using their tax dollars to help build one stadium that can be used by the students of Portales Municipal Schools and ENMU to continue a long standing tradition of cooperation and collaboration. This stadium will be an asset to the community of Portales, Roosevelt County and the hundreds and thousands of students who will continue to pass through the halls of Portales Municipal Schools for years to come. With that said, I am more than proud to support continuing efforts to make the new home of the Rams one of the greatest stadiums in the state. Johnnie S. Cain Superintendent Portales Municipal Schools “The impact of a new multi-purpose stadium on campus will be tremendous. When one considers what this new facility will mean for Eastern Athletics, for the University and for the city of Portales, it could be one of the most significant construction projects in the history of Roosevelt County!” Dr. Jeff Geiser Director of Athletics “The construction of a new stadium on the ENMU campus will greatly enhance the rehearsal experience for every member of the Greyhound Sound Marching Band. Having a surface that is permanently lined, level and free of irregularities will benefit our ensemble tremendously. We are excited to be a part of our rapidly transforming educational environment.” Dustin Seifert Director of Bands Chair, Department of Music “We believe the new multi-purpose stadium will generate more school spirit, help with forward momentum in recruiting and will help teams be more efficient in weekly activities. This stadium is a big step in turning a corner for ENMU Athletics and the city of Portales.” Josh Lynn (MA 05, BS 03) ENMU Head Football Coach, Current ENMU Football 1997-2000 $15.5 Million Goal Construction Update: As of January, the concrete for the announcer’s booth has been laid, the underground utilities are being installed, and the footings at concessions, the visitor’s restrooms, and locker rooms are complete. Currently progress is being made on scoreboard footings, field lighting installation, metal stud framing, and pouring all bleacher footings and building slabs. Those Who Lead the Way Al Whitehead Field $500,000 Former football Greyhound Al Whitehead (BS 55) and is wife Lacy of Tulsa, Oklahoma contributed $500,000 to the Stadium Campaign. “Gifts of this magnitude are exceptional and will transform ENMU and Portales,” stated ENMU President Dr. Steven Gamble. “Their gift helped us to reach the $12 million mark sooner than we thought we would. Their leadership and friendship with ENMU is immeasurable. I’m thankful to all our Stadium Campaign supporters.” “I’ve wanted ENMU to build a new stadium on campus since they built the one at Blackwater Draw,” explained Al Whitehead. “I treasure all that ENMU offered to me when I was a student athlete. My ENMU memories and lifelong friendships are indelible. Lacy and I are forever grateful to ENMU.” The Whithead’s have a legacy of supporting ENMU that transcends the past fifty years. The couple understands the need to consistently support Starter Scholarships, Bench Club, the 2023 Endowment, as well as generously fund the Albert E. and Lacy Whitehead Endowed Scholarship in Marketing and the Albert E. and Lacy Whitehead Endowment for Theatre, the Slone Band Fund, Center Stage, and various other scholarships over the years. Their contributions not only financially assist student athletes and student scholarships, but also have been used to help inspire others to financially support ENMU Athletics in past years by providing two raffle grand prize trucks. Al has been a dedicated member of the ENMU Alumni Board since 1985, serving on many important committees and supporting the alumni scholarship program. As a former Greyhound, he remains active in the ENMU Bench Club and helps with many fundraising Al and Lacy Whitehead activities. “Lacy has even been gracious enough to allow Al to serve on the Alumni Board for more years than we can count,” remarked Stephen Doerr, ENMU Foundation board president. “This has meant a big commitment on Lacy’s part too! We all believe that both Al and Lacy bleed green with loyalty for ENMU.” Graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1955, Al Whitehead founded and co-founded several oil companies and is currently chairman and C.E.O. of Empire Petroleum Corporation in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His wife, Lacy, has been by his side the entire time. $500,000 from Addie Swearingen Foundation The Addie Swearingen Foundation contributed $500,000 to the Stadium Campaign. Mrs. Swearingen was a great friend to ENMU. Over the years, she endowed many scholarships to support students in nursing, the fine arts, accounting and other academic programs. Mrs. Swearingen also donated funds for the University’s pipe organ and donated much of her extensive Addie Swearingen art collection to ENMU. She was honored in 1983 with the ENMU Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award and recognized in 2002 as the ENMU Foundation’s Philanthropist of the Year. Mrs. Swearingen passed away in 2008. It was important to her to remember ENMU in her estate plans. This is her most definitive gift to ENMU and it is one that will transform Portales and ENMU. Helping Us Reach Our Goal Griffith & Field Scoreboard $400,000 Richard Griffith (MBA67) and his wife Gilley contributed $400,000 to this multi-purpose stadium that will ultimately complete the campus. Mr. Griffith remembers trying to convince the ENMU administrators back in 1967 not to build the stadium at Blackwater Draw.” I have always believed that it needed to stay on campus,” recalls Mr. Griffith. “Now we can finally move out of the loneliest structure in New Mexico.” The Griffiths are also generous supporters to ENMU, directing their gifts to the University Fund and various scholarships supporting their firm belief in the value of higher education. Their significant gift to the Stadium Campaign is made in honor of Richard Griffith and his longtime friend and business partner Dan Field of Lovington, New Mexico. Originally Cissell Oil, the company was purchased by Alice’s brother Wayne Stratton in 1937 and renamed C&S Oil Co. Alice and Wayne sold the business to Shamrock Oil and Gas in 1959 but Wayne bought it back two years later. Wayne’s son Mike Stratton joined the business after graduating from ENMU in 1971. Mike and his wife Marnee purchased C&S in 1997. All of their children have worked for C&S during their high school and college years, with their two oldest daughters, Alyssa Idsinga and April Rutter, permanently joining the business in the 1990s. Today, Alyssa and April manage the business with their father. C&S has been delivering diesel and gas to the farms, ranches and dairies of Roosevelt County since its inception. Over the years, they expanded the company’s services to include propane, auto parts and tires to better serve their customers. More recently, C&S added a gas station and diesel station in Portales and a new station in the Dora community. Wayne Stratton served on the ENMU Board of Regents from 1974 to 1981. During his term as a regent, Wayne and his wife Marjorie became close friends with then ENMU President Warren Armstrong and his wife Joan. The Armstrongs would later start the Wayne and Marjorie Stratton Endowed Scholarship, which is still funded by Wayne and Marjorie’s children. Wayne and Marjorie cared deeply about their community and supported many youth, school and charitable organizations over the years. Mike and Marnee have continued this tradition of giving back to their community and their neighbors. They are proud to be a part of the growth of ENMU, Portales and Roosevelt County over the years and look forward to being a part of the exciting things yet to come in our great community. Tillery Family Foundation $200,000 The Tillery Family Foundation established by George Tillery (BBA 76) pledged $200,000 to the new stadium. “The Tillery family is pleased to support the new stadium that will provide students and athletes with events and entertainment for many years to come, just as ENMU has been a blessing to the Tillery Family.” ENMU has been an influential part of the Tillery family. George’s parents, Garland and wife Georgia Tillery, raised five children: Gayle, George, Gary, Glen and Gena while growing their locally owned Tillery Chevrolet-GMC, Inc. dealership, established in 1955. Four of the five children attended ENMU: Gayle (Attended), George (BBA 76), Gary (BBA 79) and Glen (BBA 86). The Tillery siblings chose ENMU because it was in state and close to home... but not too close. Shortly after Garland passed away in 1984, the family established the Garland Tillery Memorial Scholarship. George Tillery and the Tillery Family Left to Right: Gary Tillery, Gena Hoagland, Gayle Pedrick, Glen Tillery, George Tillery Foundation have generously supported the scholarship honoring his father and to the Sigma Chi Scholarship fund over the years. HOMESPOT of Portales generously contributed $50,000 to the new Greyhound Stadium Campaign. “We at HOMESPOT support the stadium for various reasons. It will strengthen pride and school spirit to the University community. It will symbolize a vibrant and healthy university athletic program and attract students to ENMU and the Portales area. It is time for ENMU to have an on campus football stadium.” -The HOMESPOT Team of Jody Bailey, Scott and Jane Christensen The Merrick Family "My wife and I were both raised here in Portales and feel great pride and loyalty in living here. I've said many times that Portales been very good to me and my family, so if we can be a small part of this addition to our city and university we feel great pride in doing so." - Max Merrick "As a proud ENMU graduate and Portales resident, I am thankful to be able to contribute to the new stadium. This is a big win not only for Eastern but the entire community. Go Greyhounds!" -Megan Hamilton The Merrick family has contributed both individually and corporately for a combined gift of $50,000 toward the new stadium. The Time is Now Dear Alumni and Friends of ENMU, The Time is Now to take one of the biggest and most image-enhancing steps in the history of not only our athletic program, but also the entire University. Our administration, our student body and the Portales community acknowledge the importance of this new facility to the future of our university, and they have shown their support. The Time is Now for our fans, alumni and friends to get in the game. New Mexico law does not allow state education funds to be used for construction of college athletic facilities, so private dollars are vital to our success. Although the student fee and Portales school bond support started this project rolling, your gifts and commitment to ENMU’s long-awaited landmark stadium will make what was only a dream into a reality in the very near future. This is by far the most ambitious undertaking by the University and the ENMU Foundation. Won’t you join us? Play your role in this ultimate team effort and help us declare victory.
