Thomas/Weir/Hass, Calculus, 12th ed. Even if you buy a used
book, you will need to buy the accompanying Access Kit for MyLabsPlus (see ’homework’).
Your calculator has to be capable of graphing functions and zooming
in. Symbolic math may be useful, but is not required. Any device
with communication capabilities (eg phone calculator) is not allowed
on exams.
Grading
Your grade for the course will be determined from
10% Online homework
20% Quizzes (every Tuesday except exam weeks, Dead Week)
20% In-class exams (10% each, Tuesday 2/3 and 3/31)
10% Projects (4 small-group assignments)
20% Midterm night exam (Wednesday 2/25, 8.15-9.45pm)
20% Final exam (in week May 4-8)
Online Homework
We use Pearson MyLabsPlus (MLP, http://iastate.mylabsplus.com), which
comes with our textbook. Announcements about due dates etc. will be posted
on Blackboard and sent out via email. Your lowest 3 homework scores will be
dropped. Late homework will not be accepted unless the MLP system was down
for everyone. Due every Monday, last assignment due Monday of Dead Week.
Caution: While MLP is quite reliable, I have seen error messages like ’you
have been logged out due to inactivity’ or ’system failure or problem with the
website’, all nonsense. Always try the workaround suggested on the Math Department website http://www.math.iastate.edu/Undergrad/Current.html
(scroll down to ’Help with browser issues’). As far as we know, this has helped
every time.
