English Picture Party: Position on list: 1 TiU International Name candidate: Tobias Klein (Associate Professor, TiSEM) Since 2014, I am a representative of TiU International in the University Council. I have been heading the 2014 list of candidates and am also heading the list of candidates for the 2016 elections. Important discussions I have been involved in related to the new data science initiative, BEST, the appointments of new members of the supervisory board, the re-appointment of our president, the discussion on the teaching vision, and the many discussions related to making our campus more lively and inspiring. You can get an idea about this on our Facebook page and in these articles. My aim was always to point out how we can improve the way we are organising ourselves such that academics and support staff can work better together to achieve excellence in resea rch and teaching and reach out to society, for instance by working with firms. In these discussions, my contributions have always been guided by the TiU International Core Values. I believe that we should live ourselves what we preach. When working with co -authors, colleagues in my department, Ph.D. students and last but not least the students in our bachelor and master programs, I feel committed to the highest quality standards, transparen cy in the decision making, being a good communicator, sharing the burden, and working together. See here for Tobias Klein’s personal website. 1 Picture Party Position on list: 2 TiU International Name candidate: Korine Bor (Management Assistant, US) I joined Tilburg University in 2009 and currently work as Management Assistant for the departments of Econometrics and Operations Research as well as Economics at TiSEM. From Sept 2014 until January 2016 I was a member of the staff fraction of the TiSEM Faculty Council which allowed me to critically follow and comment on the decision making process of the pre implementation phase of the BEST operation. With the implementation currently ongoing, there is still need to closely monitor its progress. I support TiU International’s core values and believe that by working together our academics and support staff can achieve the goal of excellence in research and teaching. Support staff looking for career advancement should be given every opportunity to grow and not be kept from moving forward by budgetary constraints. Good performance should be rewarded. Feedback should be encouraged and work both ways not only from the top down. As TiU International we will remain vigilant about any and all decision making processes that not only involve our staff but also our campus, like the renovation of buildings, and make sure that there is adequate transparency during the process and that final decisions are always based on solid evidence and supported by a majority. Together we can make the difference. 2 Picture Party Position on list: 3 TiU International Name candidate: Koen Van Aeken (Associate Professor, TLS) In 2006, I joined Tilburg Law School. With a Belgian passport and a PhD in social and political sciences, this move may have felt initially a bit awkward. Law faculties were traditionally oriented on national jurisdictions and provided vocational training. The law faculty at Tilburg, however, was exceptional in this regard. An international outlook and an interdisciplinary angle were actively endorsed. Soon, TLS and Tilburg University started growing on me. Fantastic colleagues in services, in schools, from PhDs to established names, from all over the world, are to be held responsible here. They proved to be solid partners in scholarly exploration and educational innovation. In return, it felt as a natural duty to humbly engage in administrative affairs. Tw o terms I was in the Faculty Council of the Law School. I quickly discovered the value of an open dialogue - sometimes frank, always respectful. I listened to like-minded peers. I listened to members with partly differing opinions so I could learn. And I listened carefully to members with opposing ideas, which went totally against my opinion, so that my ideas would not regress to immovable truths. It is this spirit that I would like to bring to the University Council. Our university is a great one, but competition lurks around the corner and an ongoing avalanche of challenges descends on us and society at large. Short term and ad hoc, reactive governance is very tempting in such context. I believe, in contrast, that “fear is the mind killer”. Proud and confident, we should dare to think in the longer run, inspired by a vision of a university that matters. A university that is a game changer, not just in the region, but on a European and even a global map as well. Such a vision starts with the people. Human potential on campus is huge, but underused. The abundant and youthful creativity of PhD students, and the hands-on wisdom of support staff, are underrated resources. Diversity in the student body and in the academic staff is yet to be fully regarded as a source of strength. Excellent jobs by employees should be rewarded. Truly excellent people may lead the university, on the stringent condition that they adhere to the main principles of good governance: transparent, inclusive and evidence-based. These people, and the ones that will join us in the future, will spend much time on campus. A buzzing, green and beautiful campus, with quality housing and healthy and yummy food, that is attractive to the bright minds we like to come here. This vision of a world class university is supported by TiU International. I am on the list for the University Council at position 3. 3 Picture Party Position on list: 4 TiU International Name candidate: Elisabeth Beusch (Ph.D. researcher, TiSEM) Some may think that Ph.D. students are just passersby, staying far away from university politics. I want to challenge that view and give Ph.D. students a voice in the University Council to help shape policies in a manner that also takes the needs of our quite heterogeneous group into account. Like Bachelor and Master students we made a choice by coming to Tilburg University and one reason for many of us is Tilburg University's excellence in research and teaching. If I become a member of the University Council for TiU International I will do my best to make sure that Tilburg University continue s to be a place known for its research, teaching, and openness to the international community. Picture Party Position on list: 5 TiU International Name candidate: Frans Pouwer (Professor, TSB) My name is Frans Pouwer, I am affiliated with the Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology of Tilburg University (TiU) as a professor of Medical and Clinical Psychology. Most of my research is focused on the behavioural and emotional aspects of diabetes mellitus. Diabetes is a common chronic disorder, currently affecting approximately 415 million adults and 542.000 children worldwide. As a full professor of Medical and Clinical Psychology, I also teach within the 2 -year master of Medical Psychology and supervise students of the master of Clinical Psychology. I fully support the program of TiU International! A common saying is: “Good is the enemy of the best”. This holds true for TiU as well. The quality of both TiU-research and TiU-education is already at a high level, and the university is generally well organised, but there is certainly room for further improvements. This can be achieved for example through wider use of the English language, by attracting more international students and staff, but also by better use of video lectures. This will enable TiU to make sure that the World’s leading experts teach our studen ts and that our authorities teach 4 students at other universities. I also believe that it is very important our best students should be stimulated (and helped) much more to visit other leading research institutes across the globe. Vote for us: TiU International will work hard to promote excellent education and top-quality research at our university! Picture Party Position on list: 6 TiU International Name candidate: Max Spotti (Assistant Professor, TSH) Max is an assistant professor at the Department of Culture Studies of the Tilburg School of Humanities. He is currently engaged in the following research areas: 1) the institutional responses to superdiversity in multicultural societies across Europe with a specific focus on regular multicultural primary school classrooms and classrooms for the reception of young third country nationals. 2) e-citizenship apprentship, e-inclusion/exclusion and the construction of authenticity through language testing regimes for admission and integration across Europe. 3) Cultural and linguistic commodification brought by the tourism industry in rural areas, with a specific focus on Finnish Lapland and more generally at the geographical/socio -economic/cultural margin. 5 Picture Party Position on list: 7 TiU International Name candidate: Yvette van Osch (Assistant Professor, TSB) I am an enthusiastic assistant professor in Social Psychology at TSB and study a variety of topics (e.g., stereotypes, discrimination, emotion, culture), I am passionate about teaching, and very fond of this University. I believe in the strength of knowledge without borders. This means that I greatly value diversity (in terms of seniority, gender, cultural background, and practical experience), and believe that we should use that diversity to our advantage. A strong focus on collaboration between supporting and academic staff, Dutch and foreign staff, and students and staff will give us the best possible outcomes! 6
