Appendix: Graduating Senior Survey .....................................................................................................................................38
1. INTRODUCTION
This document presents an analysis of the Graduating Senior Survey, given December 1999
and May 2000 prior to Graduation Exercises. Responses were obtained from 1,797 students
(578 December, 1999 and 1,219 May, 2000). Each student was asked to respond to the 48
questions on the survey. In addition, students were asked to provide demographic information
and information about education and employment plans.
2. METHODOLOGY
Data from the December 1999 and May 2000 graduations were combined into a single
database for purposes of analysis. Data were then analyzed to show patterns of response by
college. Demographic information includes gender, age, residency and transfer status. Table 1
provides a summary of demographic characteristics of the graduating seniors.

3. OBSERVATIONS
Tables 2 and 3 provide mean ratings for educational experiences and skills, and academic and
social environment, respectively. The mean values cited are total averages of student
responses on the survey instrument with 1 indicating the lowest level of agreement and 5 the
highest. The analysis of the graduating senior survey reveals that students have reported a
consistent degree of satisfaction over their educational experiences and academic and social
environment. In general, averages are relatively high for almost all the indicators. However,
minor variations in student responses do exist among various schools. The following are some
of the key observations:
q Students perceive that they received a quality education at UNI and would recommend
UNI to others.
q Students perceive that they had positive relationships with faculty and other students at
UNI and that UNI has a good academic and social climate.
q Students perceive UNI’s teaching and learning environment as positive but have
questions about the purpose and quality of the General Education Program.
q Students' perceptions of their basic computer skills and basic computational skills are
mixed.
q Students' perceptions of their communication skills are mixed.
q Students do not perceive UNI as a strong contributor to preparing to use a foreign
language.
q Students perceive that UNI has contributed to their professional development.
Tables 5 and 6 show students’ plans after graduation. About 46 percent of the respondents
were employed on the day of graduation. The College of Business Administration students were
more likely to be employed at the time of graduation. The College of Natural Sciences had the
highest percentage of students accepted in a graduate program. Overall, very few students plan
to pursue a second undergraduate degree.
