Scholarship Policy University of Northern Iowa Interfraternity Council March 23, 2011 I. Scholarship Mission Statement A student at the University of Northern Iowa is here primarily for an education and to act as a student first. The goals and activities of Greek organizations shall complement and support the educational mission of the university. A chapter’s scholastic achievement ultimately depends on the performance and motivation of each individual member, but the drive for excellence can be stimulated by each chapter through the support and assistance provided by the Interfraternity Council, the Greek Community, and the University as a whole. Each fraternity at the University of Northern Iowa will maintain an environment conducive to learning. II. Minimum Chapter GPA Requirement Required per chapter for good standing… 2.52 Spring 2010 2.54 Fall 2010 2.56 Spring 2011 2.65 Fall 2011 2.75 Spring 2012 The Interfraternity Council will require that all chapters maintain the minimum GPA set forth on an increasing scale per semester until leveling out in Spring 2012. The Interfraternity Council will hold a special meeting to evaluate whether to continue increasing Scholarship Standards on an incremental basis by the 3rd Regular Joint Meeting of the Spring 2012 Semester. III. Academic Achievement Report Each chapter will be expected to fully complete and submit the Academic Achievement Report as provided by the IFC Director of Scholarship. The due date for submission will be set by the director. Chapters will be given at least a two week notice prior to the submission date. Failure to turn in the Academic Achievement Report will result in the suspension of all social events of the chapter. Chapters will still be able to submit all the required forms for any upcoming social events. Social events will be immediately reinstated upon the submission of the Academic Achievement Report. 1|Page IV. Definitions: 1. Academic Guidance - A chapter will be placed on Academic Guidance when the Chapter GPA for a single semester falls below the required minimum GPA outlined to remain in good standing. 2. Academic Probation - A chapter will be placed on Academic Probation when the Chapter GPA for two or more consecutive semesters falls below the required minimum GPA outlined to remain in good standing. 3. Social Events – As defined by the Social Policy, a social event is any function with a predetermined date and location, on or off fraternity or sorority property, approved by the chapter President or corresponding chapter chair, recognized by the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils, where alcohol may or may not be present. V. Incentives To reward chapters for outstanding scholarship and academic achievements, IFC provides an incentive system that aims to foster the development of each chapter, individual Chapter members, and the entire Fraternity Community. These incentives will encourage and reward Chapters that fulfill requirements that have been set forth by this document. 1. Highest Chapter GPA Incentives a. The chapter with the highest overall GPA will receive $300.00 to spend on one of the following as approved by the IFC Director of Scholarship: 1. House Improvements 2. Professor Social Event 3. Educational Programming (for chapter or all students) b. Plaque recognizing chapter as obtaining the highest GPA 2. Most Improved Chapter GPA Incentive a. The chapter with the most improved GPA from one semester to the next will receive 50% off IFC dues per member that has above a 3.0 GPA. 3. All Chapter Incentives a. Greek Week Points 1. Five points per member with a 3.0 GPA or above 2|Page 2. Ten Points per member with a 3.5 GPA or above 3. Fifteen Points per member with a 4.0 GPA 4. Fifty Points if every member of the chapter has Five Greek Study Hours . 5. Twenty Points Highest New Member GPA 6. Fifteen Points Highest In-House GPA b. Chapters will be ranked in order of GPA to determine date selection for scheduling social events at social roundtables. VI. Academic Guidance - 1st Semester 1. The chapter may only host two social events per semester. 2. The chapter will remain in Good Standing for National Reporting purposes. 3. The chapter will have a meeting with the IFC Director of Scholarship and the Greek Advisor to review the chapter plan of action and to assess the reasons for not meeting standards. 4. The chapter will provide the IFC Director of Scholarship with all information that is needed in a time frame outlined by the director. 5. The chapter will hold a program that is academically and educationally based at a regular meeting and the IFC Director of Scholarship must be informed of the program. VII. Academic Probation – Two or More Consecutive Semesters 1. The chapter cannot host or participate in any social events or UNI sponsored social activities such as: Homecoming, Greek Week, or be eligible for Greek Awards. 2. The chapter will be placed in Bad Standing status for National Reporting purposes. The chapter will remain in Good Standing for IFC Reporting purposes. This designation would also be placed on all assessment tools regarding grades that are published by the Greek Advisor. 3. The chapter must schedule two academically based programs: One for the Greek Community and one for the chapter in the semester following the academic period in which the chapter falls below the minimum GPA requirement. The chapter must inform the IFC Director of Scholarship of the programs. 4. A meeting with the Greek Advisor, Chapter Advisor, Chapter President, Chapter Scholarship Chair, Chapter Recruitment Chair, and the IFC Director of Scholarship will take place to discuss the chapter plan of action for the semester in which probation begins. 3|Page 5. The Greek Advisor will contact a National Representative of the Chapter. VIII. IFC Membership Review - 3rd Consecutive Semester 1. This would place the Chapter’s IFC membership in jeopardy. 2. The chapter would remain in Bad Standing status for National Reporting purposes. 3. Upon reaching this level, the Chapter will schedule a meeting with a National Representative of the Chapter, the Dean of Students, Greek Advisor, Chapter Advisor, Chapter President, Chapter Scholarship Chair, and the IFC Director of Scholarship. 4. The Greek Advisor will contact a National Representative of the Chapter. 4|Page Amendments: March 23, 2011- IFC voted 3-0-1 to raise the minimum GPA requirement for all chapters to a 2.75 by the Spring of 2012. 5|Page
