Iowa Regents Break 40 Year Gun Ban
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Iowa Board of Regents approved a proposal
Wednesday morning to allow campus police to carry guns.
The board meeting in Iowa City approved the change 6 to 2.? The change
impacts the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of
Northern Iowa and is? part of an overall security plan review.
Regents Michael Gartner and Rose Vasquez opposed the plan, with Gartner
saying larger problems on Iowa's campuses involve alcohol and drugs, which
cannot be addressed by giving guns to campus officers.
No word yet on how soon the change will take effect.
The review was ordered after the campus shootings at Virginia Tech in April.
Building Naming Rights
The Iowa Board of Regents has approved a new policy for naming buildings at
the state's three public universities.
The policy doesn't place additional restrictions on corporate names. However, it
does require ``thorough due diligence'' for potential donors _ whether they are
corporations, foundations or people.
The board waived a second reading of the policy, which means it goes into effect
immediately.
The issue surfaced after the College of Public Health at the University of Iowa
considered a $15 million gift to name the college for Wellmark Blue Cross Blue
Shield.
The faculty rejected the idea, saying it would hurt research funding.
